I have a stock 96. I dont need more power for pulling a small car trailer that I use the truck for. I am wondering what basic mods I should start with that will not affect mileage (unless I get into the power more). What I am saying is I dont want to do anything that will reduce my mileage if I dont change my driving habbits.

You did not say auto or stick. The least expensive upgrade would be a plate. Depending on the plate it will give you about 35 more hp and could increase fuel mileage IF you can keep your foot out of it. Kind of hard for mortals not to like the extra power and use it more often. I saw about 1 mpg more towing with my first plate but I developed a case of the gottahaveits and now my towing mpg is good my around town is the same as towing-yes I am mortal and I like to smoke out little rice rockets. :D

Your stock hp was 215. With a plate (#10 I think) from TST you will go to around 240. Includes a boost fitting that will increase boost to handle the extra fuel. Great people to work with. :D

The diesel dyn kit (with a plate only I think) is a mild power uprate. With a liitle less pony er. . ram than the TST plate mentioned.

I really like the DD injectors! :) They are not cheap, but everything they promise.

The benefit to the plate is the torq. increase over stock more so than the hp.

You will feel 200 lb. ft. of torq. Of course then you'll want more and maybe never be satisfied. :)

Good luck,

Andy

power increase

I like the TST plate and the governor kit. Nether gave any more mileage. Setting the timing from stock to 17 made a world of difference. Mileage went up to almost 20 also. JImK

My .02

My truck is the same as yours. I would do the #11 plate and try to have the timing checked (set to 15-16). The #11 plate (from TST, Piers and many others) is good for high 200 in our engines conservatively. It will run safe with a free exhaust (loss or open the Catylitic convertor) and run a clean (may upgrade) intake. The timing will help keep or improve MPG. The setup (with plate not forward from center much... . ) will give good power, not requrie a new clutch, be EGT safe and be a modest cost.

Save the injectors, GSK kits, turbos and more agressive plates until you are board with the power made above.

Start in order. They tend to be more affordable.

#1 gauges

#2 exhaust

#3 intake air filter

Now it will start costing you.

#4 Timing

#5 injectors

#6 cam plate.

After this point you will become a bom-aholic. (see Piers).

Its up to you. But this is pretty much how I did it. But I still have the stock cam plate in. Then tried 370 injectors. Pulled them out for clutch slipping.

Increase Power

The order I went in has substantially increased power, with lower Exhaust Tempatures & Milage is the same.

!. 4" Jardine Exhaust

2. K & N Filter

3. Guages - Boost, EGT & Trans Temp

4. Bullydog stage two plate

Next item will be timing & Adjustment if nessasary. I'm happy with the improvements.

I find the number 8 Tst plate works well with your application and has managable EGT's. A pyro is certainly smart though especially when towing.

It's also mild enough to be kind to the auto transmission.

uprate your power ??

go to TST web site and go where it gives you a listing of the fuel plates by the years, i think is the best advice, as to which plate to put in for your up grade project.

just my penny's worth.
