Archived 96 trans issues

Truck wont start in 1st gear unless I do it manually, O/D light stays on and so does trans temp light. It doesnt make a difference if the trans is cold or warm. Its always the same. Any ideas?

Your trans is going into limp mode for some reason. You might try disconnecting your batteries to reset you computer. It probably wont help but its free so its worth a shot.

Check all your connections, look for any rust inside the connectors. Radio shack TV tuner cleaner has worked well for me with these issues.

would seem your rear band need adjusting or some thing is wrong with it. Have you checked the fluid level?



Trans light probably wire shorting out somewhere.

Overdrive light switch (test) or wires shorting out.

I'd go with the bad electrical connection. Check the temp sensor, too.

Did you determine your problem?

I've not rebuilt a 96 model, but it is probably the same as the 518 or 727 where the sprag clutch broke. Could be the case or the clutch just shelled out. When placing the trans manually in first that applies the low/rev band which does the same thing as the sprag clutch.

This was in a conversion truck I put together. Truck started life as a 2000 24V and I swapped in a 96 engine and harness and totally spaced off swapping the VB wiring to the pre 98 style. Changed that and it works like new again.
