I have a '96 2500 and my brother in law has a '97 2500. His truck is starting to run awful and mpg are in the toliet. He is also experiencing hard starting. I believe he is going to need to do his return fuel line. When he is here on vacation if I show him how I did it on my '96 will it be the same on his '97?

I was also wondering how to do my check or change out me fuel return line on my 97 2500. I am not sure what I am looking at so i need some help with it.

i keep threatening to do it but after all of the threads i have read on it (just do a search), i am getting very little encouragement..... good luck... ... .



p. s. i think it is something like having arms like an orangutan and hanging by your ankles... .
 
Trust me, it ain't all that bad!!

Just find the supply and return steel lines running up from the drivers side and replace all the rubber lines to the pumps. I admit that it did help to remove the starter, so while you have it out go ahead and put Larry B's starter contacts in.

Best way is to remove the entire fuel filter housing and go at it from the top. It's still a major pain. A friend of mine found a mechanic in town who will replace both hoses, fuel filter and clean the fuel heater screen for around $100, you supply parts.

I know what I'm going to do from now on even with hose replacements on several rigs forever behind me...
 
Use marine rated diesel line. It's of much better quality versus OEM. Do not use gasoline fuel line. I also did LarryB's starter contacts at the same time. My problem was actually the PreHeater to lift pump hose. I'm surprised I couldn't see daylight through the dryrot.



Above the starter, near the transmission one of the fuel lines had a compression clamp that required a dremel. Lastly, take apart the starter on a workbench to catch the ball bearing inside. I only removed the fuel filter. It wouldv'e been easier to remove the fuel filter housing.

A $100 is super cheap for that job. I think $200 would still be a reasonable price. After doing mine, I wouldn't even consider doing someone else's for less than $350.
 
When my fuel line developed a pinhole leak a few years back, I took it to my dealer and they fixed it. The job looked like a royal pain. When the mechanic finished the work, I asked what the damage was, the service manager just smiled and said, "Get out of here. This one's on us. "



My dealer is definitely not a "stealer". That's why I'll do all future truck purchases from them. Really nice folks.

I would pay the $100 for sure next time. I haven't gotten all the bills yet from my doing it myself yet, but it is going to be a bunch. I had my truck up on a hoist about three feet so I could work from the bottom and also the top. While climbing down out of the engine compartment I slipped and fell, broke ribs on right side and three bones in my right foot. :mad:

Now the big problem, I am not at home and no one around to help me out. I had to hook up the two batteries, install the fuel filter and install the starter so I could get home:eek: I guess I am just getting too old to work on theas things anymore.

OUCH!!!! That would of p155ed me off I would have prob destroyed my truck in anger:rolleyes: :rolleyes:
