Have a 96 cummins with a few isssues:

#1 - put in some big injectors and a 00 cam plate ,it wouldn't evan smoke ? I'm thinking lift pump maybe?

#2 - driving down the road it will just start chugging for no reason ,if you let off the go pedal and get back on it again it starts running normal again?

please help.

Start off the easy way... if you havent done anything to the overflow valve yet, get a new one. . about 40$ shipped. theres a seller in michigan who's number is on here. Good german parts.

Also check your fuel lines, particularly around the lift pump. If your engine had 150-200k on it when you transplanted it, the pump itself could have bad seals, but theyre pretty bulletproof. .

good luck

Is the Cummins in your old truck or did you get a new one?

Even though it is only $40 I would not start throwing parts at it. I'm not a fan of doing that to find a solution.

Check your fuel pressure. Did you change the fuel filter?

Check you AFC and make sure it is working properly? You can gut it to check :)

You are not giving us much info to work with.

How big are "big injectors"? Even if your AFC is not working if the injectors are large enough they should still produce some smoke.

What kind of air are you feeding the engine (turbo)? If you are giving it a ton of air it may not smoke much anyway (espcially if the AFC is not functioning properly).

What pump are you dealing with a stick (215) or auto (180).

Maybe the rocker arm is getting hung up under the plate?

Where is the plate in the pump? Full forward? FWIW - Full forward is not always best.

Is the engine mostly stock?

Did you check the timing? How does the truck start when cold? How does it start after it sits a while.

I'm tired of typing. This should be a start.

1-it is the original motor in my 96 3500 w/auto trans , has 220,000mi on it.

2- I did put a new filter on it .

3- injectors are 16thousanths with a 4000lb pop.

4- stock turbo yet

5- plate is foward

6-motor is stock other wise

7- did not check timming it does get alittle rappy win you rev it above 2000rpm

8- it starts very very hard when cold.

First of all you are trying to push way to much fuel though and engine with a stock charger. I still think you have an a problem but if things were working right the truck would probably not run all that great, it would smoke like a freight train though (if that's what you think it cool).

Did is start hard when cold before you started changing things? Maybe your hard cold starts have to do with the FSS (fuel shutdown solenoid). It is common for them to act up with some miles on them. I would check to make sure it is not hanging up and that you are getting full movement. If you are not getting full range of motion of the FSS it will limit your fueling.

The AFC is the housing you take off to access the fuel plate.
