97 12 valve orsepower???

97 12 valve horsepower???

Can someone tell me the rated horsepower of a 97 12 valve 5. 9 Cummins, this engine is in a 97 Newmar motor home, Kountry Star. The guy who has it don't know much about it and I couldn't find any specs in the manuals that he had with the unit. Thanks, bg

There should be a data plate just forward of the inj pump on the gear case. It should have the HP listed there.

I was afraid you were going to say that. This is a front engine chassis and that part of the engine is up under the dash and floor, might have to find a contortionist to read the spec tag. Thanks, bg

I've used a small digital camera for things like this before. Just snake it on in there close and snap a picture. You may need to do it a few times to see the info you need.

Call the coach people. Stock the engine could be rated 160-230 hp.

I think the numbers are inprinted in the plate. If you get a piece of play dough, it should tell ya...

Thanks for the replies. I suspect it is a 230 HP since that is what I have seen listed on some of the MHs with the 5. 9. This one is kinda sluggish (about 19,000 lbs. ) and I was just wondering how much it could be safely turned up and still live a long time, has 22,000 miles at present. bg

I talked to the Newmar people today. The engine is rated at 210 hp in this unit. If I should end up buying it, I really wouldn't want to be doing wheelies, it doesn't have bogie wheels on the back but I would like to have enough power to tow a mid sized vehicle and climb the passes in Colorado without being honked at by some dude in an off brand truck, say about 275 horses. The unit weighs in the neighborhood of 18,500 pounds. bg
