I am going to adjust the valves on a 97 12V that I will be putting in my Ford this winter. I have the procedure from the local Cummins shop and it says to push in the timing pin to find TDC. I can't find any pin on this motor, so how do you find TDC for valve adjustment? They also say the gap is supposed to be . 010" for intake and . 020" for Exahst is this correct? Anyone with some tips for this I would greatly appreciate.

Thanks

Did you look between the pump and block? Its located at the bottom of the pump, If you can see in there its just a nub that sticks out. If it is missing then look for a hole here. When both valves float on #1 check in locating hole for depression on gear. Then mark on the dampener and a reference point on the block for next time. But be sure if you ever remove the Dampener mark it so it will go back in the same position it came off.

Yes I did find the pin thanks to the link from Bmoeller, I got the valves adjusted this morning and new gaskets on. Now I am ready to pull the motor off the frame tomorrow and pull the pan off to check things out and put a new gasket on.

JCrockett,

I have another suggestion for you and for everyone else. When you identify, TDC, mark your harmonic balancer and paint that mark. This will allow you to set number one piston on TDC without finding the pump pin. You will have to watch the valve train to know if you are injecting fuel or exhausting fuel.

Thanks,

That is exactly what I did :D

An other suggestion, and not many do this -- mark on the cover the date that the PIN was KILLED. I did mine on the cover and on the ID spec. tag on the hood by the latch. If I ever sell it the info is there with the truck.
