hello all,

i had to join to get all the perks of being a member. i have a 92 model 5. 9 with 22,000 miles on it. talked to the guy who pulled it out. it is for real. i am going to put it in a 97 f 350. yeap getting rid of the powerjoke! the straw that broke the back was a 20 dollar o ring that led to a 250 dollar sensore!

my question is, what all do i need to do to the engine before i put it in. i have been reading about the dowel pin. know i need to do that! also gov. spring. then next thing is any and all advice on this swap would be welcome. i am going to do it right. but don't want it to take a year. i need my 4x4 for hunting! Oo.

thanks

I would say, do nothing to the engine (unless you just have to do the KDP), put it in and go down the road smiling... ... However, I may be the wrong person to ask about a Fordge. I spent almost 4 yrs. converting mine, 'cause life kept getting in the way.

What transmission are you going to use? You might want to add a signiture to the bottom of your post so we can see what you're working with. Just have fun and lots of patience... ... .

A fordge conversion IS a lot of work. Are you really sure that you don't just want to repair your "flowersmoke"? They really are good engines in the diesel class. For what you're going to put into your swap you can do a bunch of repair and modifications.

well, the whole reason i am going to do the conservion is to do away with the electronics. love the diesel just am tired of being left stuck in the paking lot because yet another 100 $ sensor has gone out. i was kind of worried that i jumped the gun and got the wrong generation motor. i do not think that now. i know that i will be able to get a good pulling motor that i will be able to drive for a long time.

i am going to use my ford trans. it is a e4od. i am going to start this next month. hopefully it will not take to long.

That e40d is almost as bad a transmission as the Dodge ones can be. I would suggest a ZF 5speed for it, or even a 6 speed.

Most people i've talked with have gotten around 150,000 miles on their E4OD trannys. I'd say that's really not too bad. I wuld definitely find the biggest/baddest transmission cooler with a fan on it I could find. Heat is the auto's biggest downfall. Derale makes an awesome 25,000 GVW 16 pass cooler with a fan. Summit Racing sells them... I believe I paid about $135 for mine about 2 years ago. It's really a good sized cooler and it has the large 8AN fittings. They also have a temp sender for it that turns the fan on automatically for a small fee.

After doing the swap in my own truck, if I had to do it over, I would go with a '94 or new because of the hop up options with the "P" pump. The 1st generation Cummins are still good one's though.
