I'm working on a '97 that will run as long as the starter is engaged. As soon as you let off of the key, it dies. I suspect the start/hold solenoid on the inj pump. Which color wire is the hold and which color is the pull on the solenoid. Not being a 12valver,(sometimes I wish mine was) I don't have a manual for that year. The red wire is hot when the key is on and the white is hot at start position.

Thanks, Chris

Not sure about the color, but have somebody hold the solenoid up while its running and see if thats it. Also might try unplugging the relay and plug it back in.

Michael

The relay is NOT involved in the run position. If the red wire is hot in run then you either have a bad connection or a bad fuel solenoid. It must be pulling up in the start position because it does start and run.

Try disconnecting the shutdown solenoid (unplug it).

Then manually move the solenoid rod to the run position.

Start the truck. It should run even if the key is turned off.

To stop the engine, manually move the solenoid rod to the off / shutdown position.

Easiest way that I know to verify if the problem involves the solenoid/ relays/ or if it is a fuel problem. Just take the shutdown solenoid out of the loop.

Piers has them for $280, big discount! Make sure the hold solenoid has in fact failed by jumping 12v+ to the (I think) brown wire. Most always in the rare instance that a solenoid fails it's the pull up coil fried from sticking starter contacts. In fact I've never heard of the hold coil going out.

the "hold on" circuit (F18) is fed from fuse 9 10Amp out of the PDC. in the run position the ignition key connects circuit A1 (fuse 3) to A21. A21 powers F18 out of the PDC through fuse 9.

I would push up the solenoid and put 12 volts to the hold on solenoid of your shutoff and see if it holds up. if not call piers, if so check fuse 9 and start backprobing until you find the problem.

I turned the ign to run position and I have a constant 12volts on the solenoid side of the plug connector. I also left the key on and manually pulled the rod up but no good. Pulled the plug apart and it was clean. Tried to start it after all of this and the same thing. I went with the Cummins part to get the guy back his truck today. Thanks again!!

Thanks Todd for the fuse positions:) Chris
