Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 97 temp sensor, best place to get one and how the heck do I get to it?

My temp gauge has been pinned towards the cold side since I aquired the truck. I am assuming the sensor is toast, but I will test it when I can get to it. My first question is how do I actually reach the sensor. I know it's general location, but I have yet to see it or get my hand on it. I have looked from both under and above the truck. Unfortunatly it's dark out by the time I get home and I am forced to work by drop light. Is there an easy way to get to this thing? I'm sure I am missing something simple. Also, where is the best(cheapest) place to get one? Any info is appreciated.

Not exactly sure where the sensor is. But, I do have a question - Are you getting any heat from the heater? I had a similar thing on my 97. I could not get the needle to move even after 50 miles of highway driving. Mine turned out to be a bad thermostat. Below is a pic of what I found when I pulled the thermostat. I understand some folks remove the rubber band to avoid this problem. I left the band on the new thermostat when I installed it.

Heater will blow hot air. The previous owner told me the gauge started reading erratically and then just quit, so I am assuming the sender went bad. For all I know at this point the sensor is missing. . Any pointer on locating it, or photos would be great!

One other thing, what purpose does the rubber band provide?

Temp sensor is opposite #4 cly in the head under the intake plenum.

Had to order mine from cummins, tried napa and even the dealership and all ordered the wrong one, i had the exact same problem, now works like new

EDIT: it is drivers side all the way back at the fire wall... . and it is a pain to get to, cant see it but if you reach back there you can feel it.
