Archived 98 12 valve fuel filter leaking out the nut on top...

We changed the fuel filter and put what appears to be a "newer" style filter. We used a WIX 33349 filter. This filter does NOT have the small diameter o-ring that goes around the canister shaft. The old one did. It appears the new style filter is built so you dont need that o-ring anymore.

Here's the problem, now after we primed the filter, fuel is leaking around the nut on top that holds the canister to the housing. What did we miss, or do wrong?

You are suppose to reuse the old o-ring.

jtisdale What did you end up doing? I reuse the O-ring from my last old style filter also even though it's not needed.

Yes, we re-used the old o-ring to get it to seal. Learned a valuable lesson here- WIX filters suck.

I did a little work for a older neighbor the other day. #8 plate, gauges, BHAF, ran valves, exhaust mods and last, new Wix fuel filter. Well, after I'd finished up, I got to thinking, you know, I didn't install that top o-ring on the fuel filter.



However, it wasn't leaking so what do you do. Well, I pull it back down, dug the old o-ring out of the trash and re-installed. He hauls Blue Belgums (high priced beef cows) to sales a few hundred miles away at times and I couldn't risk the filter starting to leak.



Glad I did now that others report it leaking without the o-ring.

The Wix filters dont necessarily "suck". The new Fleetguards are coming out w/o the O ring also.

I placed my usuial order with Geno's,(1/2 dozen filters) and the new filters are the microglass type, but you now have to re use the old O ring.

This isnt by Geno's doing, it's Fleetguards decision.

PS The newer Fleetguards are also smaller in size than the last order I placed.

I hope they know what the hell theyre doing... ...

I got a Fleet Guard Fuel Filter from Cummin`s two weeks ago and the first thing the parts guy did was open the plastic bag the filter was in and look for the small O ring he said the first bach they got did`nt have the small O ring. It was there so he taped the bag shut and sent me on my way.

I've had the same problem. I bought a new fuel filter when the new style first came out. THe counter sales guy at Cummins told me I didn't need the center o-ring because it was built it. WRONG.

He second time I went up there, they gave me a new center o-ring with the new filter. This was a FleetGuard filter.

i got mine at napa and it came with all the O rings. i guess that would be a problem without it then

OK- They dont suck, they are just bottom shelf. Wix could at least send instructions on what is and isnt needed for instalation. It was partly my fault. I had never seen a filter like this that didnt come with everything included for instalation. It was a different design than the mopar filter. Besides, thats all this guy had for a filter, and Dodge wanted $47 for one. HA HA HA.

After we got the filter in and out several times and got it to seal (re-using the old o- ring), I showed him what I use, where I get them and how much I pay. Now, him, his brother and his cousin are all placing orders with me. I also order through Geno's. So, we may run into this again even with Fleet Gaurd.



Patriot- did your new filters include instructions (or any heads-up at all) to re-use the o-ring? Re-using o-rings or gaskets is a practice I have never beleived in.
