My 98 12V is in the shop for excessive blow by and oil leaks. The cause is dirt in the motor! The K&N has 66000 miles on it and it was letting dirt in around the edges is what the dealer says. The filter was cleaned and oiled every time the filter minder showed 30%.

Now my problem, the dealer will find out if D/C will warrenty the engine tomorrow. I would like to know if any one else has lost an engine due to the K&N or the stock filter box leaking by the edges?

Thanks in advance
Brant

bpete,

Have not heard of this. There has been several threads regarding the K&N air filter. It sounds to me if the dealer is correct in diagnosing the problem resulted from dirt leaking around the edges of the filter you are S. O. L. for warranty coverage on this one. I am sure both DC and K&N will take the stand that the filter was installed incorrectly and is not their fault. Do you use the sealing grease around the filter/airbox edges? If DC will not cover repairs then I would pursue seeing if K&N will cover repair costs (providing you can prove a defective filter). I don't know what K&N's policy is for cases where their product causes engine failures.

Ilflem brings up a question I have. If a dealership sells you an aftermarket product does it NOT affect/void the vehicle warranty? What I am getting at is some aftermarket products would raise warranty coverage concerns, but if the same item was purchased from the dealership is warranty issue no longer a concern? I'm not sure on this one regarding the air filter, but how about say for instance the various electronic fueling boxes for the 24 valve engines. Some dealerships sell these "boxes" or even sell trucks with them installed. Does this mean you still retain the engine and power-train warranty since a dealership installed the box? Since DC carries the warranty what do they say about this when a warranty claim occurs?, "If you had purchased that item from other than a dealership or you had installed the item your warranty would be void, but since a dealership did it we will cover the repairs"??

I'm not sure if a dealership sells or installs aftermarket products DC views it as OK also when warranty claims come around.

Thanks for the replys. I have a good relationship with my dealer and I did bring up the fact that I had purchased the filter from them. The service manager (SM) stated that he has had hundredes of CTD in with the K&N and not had truble before.

On the other hand he did say that the filter was installed properly but was a little dry. I asked him to do his best for me with his zone SM as he would make the call. If the don't stand behind it I will call K&N because the filter I bought said 100k filter guarenteed and I only have 66892. I realize that the filter could have been installed improperly before but I don't think so. I do all the servicing and I always check off a checklist.

Thanks again LOL
will be back this evening with some more info

bpete,
We sell both K&N and AFE filters and have found that the afe filter has a much better seal than the k&n. We have actually lost an engine do to the K&N seal in less than 30,000 miles on a ford truck.

bpete, there has been some talk on the bb about the K&N when used in the oem filterbox. Some feel the seal allows junk to sneek by. I use the conical K&N and have had great results. In this case the hose clamp tightens up to seal the opening onto a 4" collar.

BPINE recommends smearing some vasilene on the inside of the filter box. Do this on the downstream side of the filter. Then run the truck for 5,000 miles and check the inside of the filter box. Some have noticed dirt stuck to the vasilene which got by the seal on the K&N. Try it for yourself.

Update!!!!

My dealer called today and said that his zone rep. called today and said that D/C would warrenty the whole thing. Way to go D/C, you have just proved again what great customer service you have.

New block, head, and turbo on the way.

Congratulations on the good news. Sounds like you have a terrific dealer who is willing to "go up to bat for you". who is this dealer and where are they located? Sounds like the kind of dealer I would like to do buisness with. Would probably even be worth driving several hundred miles and hours to go to a place like this that actually believes in customer service.

Just read this thread! Great news!
Anyone else have this problem, be sure to get an oil sample before the garage messes with it. Then you'll know wht's going on inside the engine for sure.

bpete. . looks like you found the 1 in a million dealer. . buy those guys a case of cold ones and treet them good. . they are a rare breed. . glad you got the "5 star treetment" that others should be giving and don't. . be sure to post who the dealer is so others in your area can give them the business. .

The 5 Star dealer is Lopp Motors Inc. in Dodge City, KS. I have purchased 3 vehicles from them al with great satisfaction. I refered a fellow turbo head to them and they traded sight unseen going on my word of the pickups condition. Right now they have 20ish ETH rams on the lot, sorry of 5sd or autos must be ordered.

My salesman is David Lomas, tell him I refered you and he will go straight to work.

The SM is Steve, he is very knowlegeable and wants to take care of his customers.
