My truck died. It was running ok shut it off and went into store came out and truck cranked ok but wouldn't fire I swapped the fuel relay and checked fuses. The check engine light hasn't came on I had to have it towed to a DC stealer because it's 50 miles from home. Anybody got any ideas so I can keep from getting hoosed toooo bad ?:(

ps. I had to ride home in a chevy:{

I don't suppose you have a fuel pressure gauge installed? The 98. 5's are sorta known for VP failers, a freind of mine had 2 VP's go out on his '98. 5, one the way you descibed.

Of course it could be the lift pump, if you can get to the dealer, bump the starter, listen for the lift-pump, while the pump is running, lift the water drain lever on the side of the fuel filter, and see if anything flows. If it flows there, the lift pump is working.

Oh yea, I would remove the plug-n-power if your leaving at the dealer, they're not to hip on those sorts of things.

Be very careful in letting them change your vp. I have had my truck in the shop a couple of different times for the same symptoms and they always jump staight into telling me that I need a new vp. If they tell you that you need a new one tell them to tell you why, not just because this is a common problem. I will tell you some of the reasons that mine hase done this. The first was the computer had to be re-flashed to give more fuel @ start up which there is a TSB on that. Second was crap in dirt and water in the fuel tank (long story). Third was the o-rings on the water separater valve had went flat and it was leakinf thus sucking air. Also when your truck sucks air and/or gets junk in the tank it will set an injection pump code so they will tell you "It has an injection pump code, your vp44 must be bad, so bend over"

Well maybe not the bend over part. But again if they tell you you need a vp 44 remember the different situations I have had. Oh one last no start problem that I had was the lift pump failure and they can test the pressure on that tell you a definate yea or neah.

24 v still dead!!!

Well they did it again. The dealer said I had a hole in the fuel line . So they replaced the lines, and the fuel tank module, and the lift pump and I almost got home with it. before it wouldn't't start again I had to bleed the pump to get it to start. not bad for $ 700. 00 :mad: :{
