Just purchased a 98 24valver and changed the fuel filter. Now truck will not start. Broke both banjo fitting open and see fuel coming out( not much though)

I am new to the 24valver. Need better instructions on fuel filter change out until my service manual arrives.

Help???

Bump the key so the truck just starts to turn over, but doesn't start. You should hear the lift pump running under the hood for about 30 seconds. While it is running crack the banjo fitting on the inlet of the injectiopn pump. Bleed till all air is out then try to fire it up. If it still won't start, you might have gotten air into the injection pump. Then you will need to get a 3/4" wrench and crack the nut's loose where the injector lines go into the valve cover. Once loose crank the motor till it fires then tighten the nuts back down. Hopefully you won't need to go that far.

Filter?

Ok, loosen the banj fitting whre the fuel line from the filter ties into the injector pump. Have someone turn the ign. switch enough to bump the starter and leave the switch in the "on" position. You should be able to hear the lift pump running, it will run for 20 or so seconds, you also should get a good flow of fuel at the banjo fitting, if so tighten the fitting before the pump stops running. If not, you are in the same boat as a lot of us, your lift pump is not working. If you do get fuel at the fitting, loosen the nut going to the injector on the first three injectors, cycle the pump one more time then try to start, you should see fuel coming from the loosened nuts. Tighten nuts and truck should start. If the pump is bad it should be covered by the100,000 mile engine warranty. bg

If you do get fuel, don't be afraid to crank the starter for 20-30 seconds. Mine always needs that when I prime it this way. I think the shop manual says not to crank the starter for over 30 seconds, but it sure seems like a long time when you are listening.

Hard start ?

I think the 98. 5 has the same filter canister, as the 99 if so Loosen the 1/4 npt close to the front of eng ,just a few turns ,then turn key to on . Pump should run for a few seconds . Turn key to bump but not start eng. Canister will fill and air will bleed out of fitting do use rag over fitting to catch fuel . tighten when you think canister if full and no air present . May take a few times . Try as others stated ,try to hold peddle down to floor while cranking ,if starts will run ruff for a few Min until all air is out . Tip make sure battery is up to charge before starting this ,as you don't want to run the battery down . If truck will not start , crack and try starting with cracking injector lines as others stated. Do not hold stater on more than fifteen second at a time and give it a min or two between tries. LOL Ron in Metro Louisville KY:D

Did all of the above. No good!

Cracked open fitting from Lift Pump to filter, I hear pump running but no fuel coming out.

Must be bad diaphram or somthing.

Fuel

The pump is a centrifugal or gear type, no diaphgram. The other parts of fuel system are probably ok. Mine ran with the pump completely dead until it lost prime. You should be back in business with a new lift pump. Mine was covered by warranty but I understand that you can get new one from Cummins for much less than dealer and it is fairly straight forward and easy to change, just a little hard to reach. bgT

Really, I was not aware of the pump being cent. or gear type. Found new at dealer for 198. 00, they said it is an upgrade version. Not to sure on this.

Still make me wonder why I hear L/P running but nothing happening.

All the post I find and read are on dead pumps, not running , no fuel coming out. Makes me wonder if I diagnosed this one right.

Probably a DOA liftpump.

You would not be the first to hear the pump running, but no fuel being pumped. You will want to get you a Fuel Pressure gauge to monitor this. This is a very common problem on 24 valve trucks and it is thought that it could cause an early death to the VP44 injector pump... I just put on a new VP44 to the tune of $1550. 00 at 138,677 miles. OUCH! My lift pump has never completely died.
