Anyone with experience replacing the driver side Dana 60 4x4 axle seal ? Can the Differential Carrier be removed if only the driver side shaft is pulled out, or do both shafts have to be out ??

I would like to replace the ds seal only which seems easy enough, unless I have to remove the passenger side hub/axle as well. I'm wondering if the PS intermediate shaft goes into the diff and locks the carrier in place. Thanks

You have to pull both hubs and the center axle disconnect to remove the carrier.

You can then use a piece of 5/8" threaded rod and washers to remove / install new seals.

Wow, that looks like it would do the job. For now, I took about 8 ozs out of the diff last night as it was filled to the threads, I'm told it should be 3/4" below. I'll
see if that works as know I only distorted the seal when I replaced the hub (and I was careful). The other side sealed up well after leaking, and I had that side done professionally.

I'm not sure how well they're going to hole up, but I've got several installed at the moment..... One has 30k on it, mostly off road in a '98, which has had the CAD removed, so they turn all the time..... So far, so good. Lots of dust, dirt, and brush, and it's not leaking yet.....

Yep, and the fluid level is supposed to be filled below the drain plug, 1/4-1/2", IIRC.

I used those type seals when I rebuilt the front axle, but I installed them near the pumkin... from the inside. They came with my 1 1/2" Moser axles. Not a drop has come out of the axles in 68,000. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to install them from the outside and call it good.

Clean the tube bore ID with a small wire wheel, wipe it out with a degreaser, add plenty of RTV onto the OD of the seal before pressing it in. Let it set for 12 hours for the RTV to cure completely and your good to go.
