There are so many different companys offering the world for these trucks, it can get a bit confusing!I am hoping to get some good feedback on what companys(banks, edge,dr perfomance,ect... )I have read about ,that offer a quality kit. Not one thats going to end up blowing alot of smoke!and or a motor. Thanks for any assistance KC.

Scratch, Banks good products but very pricy for the HP you get. Dr. Performance... ... ... ... ... ... run for your life SCAM SCAM SCAM

Edege, now your talking, good products and a company that's stand behind what they sell, very proven. I have the same truck you do and believe me you can make it do some fun things. Best thing is figure out what you want ro do with the truck and find a vendor that will steer you right. They are plenty of those around here.

Just go to the First timer forum, you'll find lot of FAQ question there and a bunch of good info on what to expect on here. You can also search the archives, just hit the search button at the top of the page.

You can also PM me if I can be of help, just hit the PM button under my post.

Welcome to the TDR, hold on to your wallet... ... ... ..... ;) :D

Welcome!!

Most of the vendors on this site have kits or seperate parts to make your own "kit". If there were bad vendors on this site you would/will read about it , word travels fast most are good and easy to deal with. You have to decide how far or how much you want to do to your truck and shop around for best price and weigh that against customer service witch most TDR members will glady give you advice on the ones that have treated them right.

Good luck in your search

Craig

One thing to keep in mind is that with your '98. 5 you have one of the early VP44's (unless it's been replaced since) that may or may not have gone through a deburring process during assembly. There was a greater incidence of the early VP44's failing after adding a fueling box. Here's an article from Blue Chip diesel on why VP44's fail - http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/Bosch-VP44.htm . You'll want to be prepared to buy a ~$1300 injection pump if you decide to go with a fueling box. I'm not saying that it's guaranteed or anything, just that you will want to be prepared for it. There are several '98. 5's around here that have been running fueling boxes for a long time and are still running the original injection pump. Off the top of my head - BFC's is one, mine is another (118,000 miles with 80,000 of that with a major fueling box), HVAC's is another (with 700+ hp currently).

Steve -

great link, thanks. I'm running a 98. 5 and will have my THIRD VP 44 installed next week (thank you warranty) and I'm running nothing major. Do you think there is anything in the install that could increase the odds of the pump going bad?

KCayce - the best thing you can do besides what everyone above has stated is to figure out what your end goal is - high hp? heavy towing? a bit of a kick in the pants boost?

good luck and hide your wallet,

jason

The only consistent thing I've seen to help with VP44 life is having a properly functioning lift pump and monitoring it for WHEN it will fail. I do run Stanadyne performance formula most of the time to increase lubricity of the fuel as well.
