The part you mention is now called an APPS (accelerator pedal position sensor)

Yes I have had mine fail. The symtoms were a runaway engine. I could not stop the engine from accelerating max. without turning off the key at which time you have to become a gorilla to steer or to stop. It was an intermittent problem and took considerable arm twisting from Dodge to replace it. They cost approx. $800. The truck would be fine for weeks at a time and then it would bite you in the a--. Then it would do it two or three times a week. When I had my 5th whl. behind it acted like a big anchor but without it the truck was scarey when the pedal slammed to the floor and would not stop.

All is well now that it has been replaced.

My '95 had a partial TPS failure.

The early years went through a redesign of the throttle cable attaching point to the P7100 because of sticking. Prior to my incorporation of the rework kit (because the cable broke from fraying at the redesign point) I would load up the whole area with mystery oil to try and lube it. Oil got into the TPS and onto the contacts. Finally took it out, used some TV tuner cleaner, and good as new.

Symptoms because of sticking cable - high idle and desire to want to run away at stop signs because of high idle.

Symptoms because of TPS dirty - would intermittently go in/out of TC lockup for no apparent reason at constant throttle on flat roads.

Don't know what the newer APPS looks like - on the 12V the TPS only controlled the auto trans - don't think it did anything on a stick. If the design is similar then cleaning with TV tuner may be an easy first step. You can get it at radio shack.

I had my TPS (a. k. a. APPS) fail on me at about 75k miles. It was replaced under the emissions warranty.

The symptoms were, you press the throttle and nothing would happen, just idle! Did you know that you can go about 30mph in 5th gear at idle? It was enough to get me to a truck stop where I shut it down, disconnected it, reconnected it, fooled with it, and cussed at it. After that, It worked long enough to get it to the dealer.

BY the way, It is an application specific part for the ISB, which means you can't buy it from Cummins. You have to buy it from the dealer

TPPS

My paperwork calls it a Throttle Pedal Postion Sensor and yes mine was replaced due to a partial failure on my way to work. Symptom was the like Sean except there was random throttle control. Had a very fun trip on the freeway cruising at 60 then it would drop to an idle for a few seconds then full throttle and so on. Finally gave up and called DC to pick it up. Part was covered under the 36/36000 bumper to bumper warranty.
