Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 98.5 auto NO shift 2-3

I have a friend who just bought a 98. 5 auto. I shifts fine from 1-2, and 3-OD but not from 2-3 he has to lef off of the pedal the it will shift??? any ideas?

could this actually be a second gear start, shift 2-3, then OD?



The direct clutch(3rd) has to be on and hold before it can have OD.

Has the line pressure been turned up?

May just be defective governor solenoid or sensor. Scanner and pressure gauge would help determine. Governor pressure should be <3psi sitting in drive. If much higher can stroke 1-2 shift valve causing wrong gear starts. Not an uncommon problem. Hope this helps.

Possible lipseal problem on the front clutch.



When the transmission is warm, does reverse engage slowly as well?



Line pressure tests and front servo pressure tests would help a great deal with diagnosing.
