Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 98.5 possible purchase

Hello,

I have a friend that is thinkin about a 98. 5 2500 5speed, 4x4, 80k miles

Ohter than the possibility of a 53 block and the known issues with VP and LP, are there any pitfalls with this year truck? Will be lokking at it this weekend.

I bought my 98. 5 new: it how has close to 170,000 miles on it. I replaced the lift pump at 117,000, brake pads at 86,000 and have changed batteries twice. I have had no problems with the VP or anything else. It is a great truck. Averages about 19 miles per gallon, my ususal driving: has gotten a high of 22. 4. I use Amsoil in engine, transmission and differential.

You might check the front case to see if it is the updated style that takes care of the KDP. Some of the older gear cases were used on the early 24V engines. That is something that you really wouldn't need to worry about until after the truck is bought.
