I'm looking at a 98. 5 automatic 4x4 with 63000 miles . the at was replaced at 38000 miles do I need to be concerned about the automatic transmission thanks for any replies

i have a 98. 5 presently has 317000 kilometers, thats190000k. never been touched except for oil changes at each 30000 k. using plain old plus 3 fluid.

63k on any vehicle that's 7 years old is odd. I'd find out if it has a wreaked title. Loss of transmission could be anything. Condition is KING.

I did a carfax, everything came back ok;but that is low miles for a 7 year old kinda makes me wonder thanks for the replies

I bought a 98. 5 that was six years old with only 85K on it. A little more than your subject... . But if it was owned by a retiree, that is not out of line.

I have 68K on my '96. I started to have transmission problems at 1k (Yup, that's 1,000 miles) The transmission was replaced by the dealer at 10k and then upgraded around 35k.

Check the condition of the fluid - pink, not brown or burnt. TC engagement should be reasonably firm somewhere around 50mph. All other shifts on a stock transmission will probably feel mushy, i. e. like one of those constant velocity transmissions; or a single speed go cart...

There were 104k miles on mine when I bought it. It looked very clean. Spotless. After further investigation I think it had the front end repainted but everything is perfectly straight so I don't think it was wrecked. About 20k ago I replaced the transmission..... but I don't think it was all the trucks fault. I put a Edge EZ on it and aftermarket intake, then towed our boat up extremely steep and long boat ramps (Lake Powell) with the slide in camper on. The factory torque converter gave up. A trip to ATS and all is well.

My best friend is a Chrysler salesman and even with a "killer deal" on a new one, I can't justify it... . my 6 year old truck runs just as strong with 145k on it.

98.5 transmission

I've got 2 WD with 187K and no problems. Probably about 10k of that pulling 7K travel trailer and another 20K pulling 3K boat. No problems, just serviced every 30,000 miles. Tech adjusted the bands at about 120K because the shifting was getting a littly sloppy.

My dad has a 98. 5 4WD with about 90K on it and half of that is pulling a 5K travel trailer - no problems either.

Good Luck,

Don

Mine had 69k on it when I bought it and by that time according to the orginal owner it had 2 trannies in it. I put another (hopefully last) transmission in it at around 90k. I would say there's a high degree of possibility it may need work sometime within the next bunch of miles but there's always the good one out there.
