Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 98.5 will not accelerate past 4th gear

A buddy called and his 98. 5 won't run right and it will be a while before I can look at it in person, he says that it won't go over 60 and won't hardly accelerate from 4th gear on. He has a superchip DL and checked and there's no codes so its mechanical right? Had him check all boots and one was real loose said clamp was dangling. After he tightened it still not hardly any better. What about APPS what are the symptoms and wouldn't it set a code? It's his work truck so he's kinda needin' it.



Truck is 5sp, has a 1yr old vp44, and lift pump, no gauges, 250k on the clock, any other suggestions?

If he had the clamp on one of the boots dangling I can almost guarantee that boot is no longer connected all the way around. There's no way the boot would stay on without being clamped. Have him check the boots again - all the way around - and make sure there is a good seal, no holes, etc.

I told him to recheck all boot but the truck was wrecked on that side last spring and the body shop might of removed it for some reason and didn't tighten it back, but I thought that was very odd that it was "dangling" also. He says at idle he hears a hissing noise on the driver side of engine bay, but can't hear it while trying to drive.

JaMan i had my apps mess up just last month after hitting a deer and it didnt bring on the check engine light but what it was doing was not letting the trans stay locked up its not hard to reset just take batt. cables off both of them and clean the terminals up real good let the cables off for 30 mins. then put them back on then turn key on not start push accel. pedal down slowly to floor then let it up slowly then start truck it might work iam not sure but thats how you reset the apps. .
