:(Need advice and information in regards to my transmission, please.

98, 12valve, 4x4, automatic, 125,000 miles. I got the truck stuck in the mud a few weeks ago and i noticed that it would snap into overdrive. I was using the 4 wheel drive pretty hard yesterday and it smelled like the transmission overheated. It kept slipping and would not shift right. After about a half hour, it was fine. When I got home (about 50 miles over mountains pulling about 1500#), there was transmission fluid all over the bottom of my truck around front of transmission. Garage man says it overheated. The fluid is dark and smells burnt. Now, it is still blowing out fluid. Was at the add line so I added 3qts only to lose that in 15 minutes. It is slipping around 3rd gear and shutters from 1st to 2nd. Garage man says sounds like clutches and maybe the torque converter. I pull a 6000lb camper in the summer and noticed it would shutter going into overdrive. What do I do? Here are my options.

1. Rebuild

2. Install a Remanufactured

Do I need a heavier torque converter to pull this camper?

Are there any upgrades I should do at this time?

All input will be greatly appreciated:{

I wouldn't put the same thing (EOM) in there if you gave it to me. I upgrade mine to the DTT stuff and Iwould do it again given the chance. check it out here http://www.dieseltrans.com/ or call Bill K. they have a toll free number, he'll answer all your questions and won't BS ya about what would be best for YOUR application.

They have installers in the North east, Massdiesel is highly recommed on here, I never delt with them as I lived in TX. Just going on what I've read.

Hope this helps,

i see that i live close to you, i live in hagerstown md and i see you live in chambersburg. i made the upgrade to DTT 20k ago and i love it. like JEmmons said massdiesel is great i made the trek up there and back upgraded in a day. there is an installer in lebannon pa, i heard about that after i had made the trip but i have no regrets, the service was great and so are the parts. if you want to test out the DTT quality pm me, jsut trying to help out a fellow member in with transmission probs. good luck

Chances are, it is your clutches that are gone. What happens is, the line pressure to the clutches is low from the factory. This makes it shift soft (appealing to city folk). But the down side to soft shifts, its hard on your clutches (basically like taking a grinder to them). I would maybe have the TC checked out since it got all that junk in it, then have the clutches replaced, then put a shift kit in it. Live a long time then.

if money is an opion then i would get it rebuilt, instead of buying OEM. ask them to buy the thinner overdrive steels to get more clutches in and go a Trans Go kit. I got 450 hp pulling 30,000# and it pulls like mad. oh and put mercon V in it, its the best and doesn't foam like other fluids.

Call Bill at dtt. He has all the high perf part for a rebuild if you just get parts. But if you can aford it get his trany and converter. Even if you converter is ok stock converters are junk. And even if you call him for advice he will give you the straight scoop. I broke my 2001 transmission once and called him to buy one from him and instread of selling me one he told me how to fix mine. He told me how to test what he thought was wrong and then gave me the part # to get replacement parts from my local dc. He is too honest for his own good. He could of said nothing and made a easy sale.

thanks to all

:) Just wanted to thank those of you whom gave input. The shop checked and a reman will cost about $2675. They are going to tear it down and see what exactly is bad. Hopefully all I will need is a tc and clutches. I will put in a torque converter from Recon, a place located in PA. It is supposed to be heavier duty than factory. I am curious to know about this shift kit though and something to increase the line pressures. Can anyone give me info on these two items?

Since you already have it at a shop and it's apart- put good components back in! The parts from Recon are good BUT- check the advertisers in the TDR, put in a top quality torque converter and valve body. It is worth every penny. The trans will last infinitely longer and will "feel" much better in operation. Replacement with stock components will put you back on the service guys rack in a like amount of time to your original stuff! Make sure the pressure is turned up, make ABSOLUTELY sure that to cooler and lines are flushed and backflushed to clear debris! I've seen dozens of autos burn up in few days or less because a "tech" didn't clean out tthe cooler and lines. Also, now would be a good time to upgrade to a larger diameter cooling line setup and an external/larger cooler. Good Luck!
