Will 98' model hx 35 turbo fit on my truck that has an hy 35 turbo? Will I notice much of a difference? If I where to buy one used what should I look for as far as wear or problems? Thanks! Brian

Don't waste your time. I changed my HY out for a HX35, and saw my lag increase. Once it spools up you can feel it pulling harder, but not worth the work IMO. You can try a search for the post I made about the change out too.

Brian, If you can get the HX35 for a good price, get it then send it to Piers to be upgraded to Piers Super35 :)

Are you having high egt problems or do you tow?

Brian - I made the same swap a little over a year ago, but I'm running an EZ with DD2's - so it helped considerably with my EGT's when under a load - BUT it added some lag at the bottom end. Once boost begins to build - look out - the truck takes off like a rocket.

If you don't plan any additional power upgrades (bigger injectors), I wouldn't bother with the HX35 upgrade - unless you are already having high EGT problems. If you are planning more HP upgrades (and are not seeing high EGTs now) and are getting a good deal on the HX35, then go for it - but put it on a shelf until you really need it. If you already have EGT problems, the turbo will knock off about 150* preturbo under a heavy load. Just remember that you will see some lag.

In terms of what to look for, just make sure the turbine blades are not chipped or bent, the turbine spins freely, and doesn't have much (if any) endplay. Also, I would stay away from a turbo that has an excessively yellow/gold compressor housing - it's been hot. That's about all you can do without actually seeing it in action.

The turbo I am intersted in is black, painted I hope(are 98's all black?). It is 300 bucks and the mileage could be 150K+- . I am not having high EGT's, or maybe not high enough to influence my driving. I stay under 1200. I have a BHAF filter and Jardine 4". Thanks Brian

I picked my HX35 up last year. It came off a 98. 5 and had a silver housing on it. The truck had only 38k on it and I paid $300 for the turbo. If I were you, I'd keep looking if you still think you need to upgrade.

What is a new HY-35/9cm worth?

I have one that has a total of 18 miles on it. I replaced it with a HX-35 off of my 5spd when I put the injectors in last night.

Just Curious
