We have a 5. 9 24 valve Cummins (of course) which splashes oil all over the engine compartment. We are stumped as to where it is coming from. You would think it is the air to air cooler. The inside of the fan shroud was covered and the fan was pushing engine oil onto the towed vehicle, thru the rad and air to air.

It seems to leak only under pressure. We are at the point of re-installing the rad and air 2 air , minus the shroud, and go for a major spin. Ideas? Thanks in advance, Joel

Check and make sure the engine oil level is not high. If it the 05 it could be a bad injector putting diesel in the crank case. bga

Clean the engine hold enough so you'll see newly deposited oil. Take the oil filler cap off and rubber-band a cloth over the opening. Then drive it. If less oil is splashed, it'll be fair to think you have excessive blow-by. If the same amount of oil is splashed about, then blow-by prolly should not be suspected.

Does the 24V in your RV have the same breather as in a pickup? If it comes out of the front cover like the pickup does, then you may just need to route it somewhere where the blowby/oil mess won't get distributed by the fan. Also, as mentioned before, too high oil level or too much blowby could also cause similar problems.

Re: blowby

The blowby tube is as dry as the Sahara desert. I will try to post the results after we assemble far enough for a test drive.

Yee-haw !

Found a broken seal (section of rubber 1/2 inch long MIA) on the telescoping section of the oil fill tube which would create a stream of blowby gases , thereby inviting a small stream of oil to follow the tube and hence dump onto the top of the air to air where a lot of the mess was concentrated. Ordering the tube from Freightliner and the rad hoses and charge air hoses and an idler pulley that is noisy etc. Tomorrow bright and early I hope to get these folks mobile and then we will be sure there are no other leaks. Thanks for the input.

Well, the folks left our town on Satruday AM. I spoke to them last evening to confirm the repair; turns out they drove 40 miles. Checked for leaks. Nothing. Took 100 miles until another leak surfaced. They decided against returning for me to furthur investigate, said the oil consumption was way less, and the owner believes there was 2 leaks. I will try to post again once they let me know where the second was.
