I finally got some rain and have 2 dually 4x4's, one is a 2001 3500 5 speed 5. 9 cummins 4x4, does it have a 4x4 lite on the dash, same question for exact same truck but a 1999 with 5 speed 4x4 dually, if they have a dash lite where is it and how to troubleshoot it please. How can one check to make sure the 4x4 is working in the truck without jacking it up and putting it into 4x4??? Is the 4x4 transfercase manual shifted or is it electric or vaccum somehow??? Thanks in advance. Seems like one of the truck is not engaged the front axle, i can get both in low range but something is off or i am imagining it??

Yes they have a yellow 4WD lamp on the dash under the AIR BAG lamp. It doesn't light up at startup like most of the lamps. On trucks with a CAD (center axle disconnect) (the '99) there's a switch on the CAD that actives when the collar locks the front driveshaft. On later trucks (like my '02) there's no CAD but still a 4WD lamp. I assume the switch is on the transfer case.

The CAD is a box on the passenger side axle tube with a vacuum actuator and there's a vacuum switch in the transfer case. If there's no vacuum or the line is broken (or it's melted to the exhaust like my '98) then the CAD won't engage and the lamp will stay off. Other problems are a failed actuator, failed switch, or gummed up collar inside the CAD.

I went and looked and there is no cad box on the 99. Does anybody have a diagram or a photo of how the 4x4 engages on a 1999 and a 2001 4x4 both 5. 9 cummins?? Thanks for the reply, I thought i remembered seeing a 4x4 lite on both trucks, now all i have to do is figure out why mine are not working.

Apparently Ramchargers had them from 1984 - 1993. I found a picture on Wikipedia (under the truck looking forward):
