Hey guys,

I'm hoping someone can help me out. My father has a 99 with one of the 53 blocks and it has cracked. It is a 5 speed. The question I have is, We are going to start the process of looking for a used engine, and was wondering if it mattered what it came out of as far as 5 speed or Automatic?

Any help would be great.

Dennis

I have read here that it is possile to fix the crack sometimes. Try the search engine. There is a lot of material here on this subject. It may not be as bad as you think.

Thanks AC,

I have been doing alot of reading on the subject since your post. My only question is what are these people using for sealant. No one really comes out and says what they are using to seal the crack after they drill and tap the holes.

Thanks again

Dennis

I am wondering about one thing on this subject. Those of us who purchased our trucks with the 53 block did so under the impression that all was well. Now we found out that Cummins sold alot of bad blocks and worst of all they know it. I would not have bought my truck if I had know it was a ticking time bomb. What would the chances be of a class action lawsuit to force the replacement of these engines. I am all for that. If this has been discussed before just ignore me, but this is something that really gets to me.

Contact Cummins in Ohio. My buddy had a '99 #53 block that the bottom fell off of and Cummins split the cost of replacing the block with a #56 block with him. He had 150K miles on it and it was bombed and driven hard. I think the total cost was in the neighborhood of $2300. Cummins Northwest did the work and it runs better than it ever did. Call Cummins and I'll bet they help you with the rebuild. Go for it. 98. 5 #53 block 90K miles F1 injectors Van AAken, box AFE,gages.
