Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) '99 Automatic Transmission Troubles

The auto in my buddies '99 started acting up the other day. It won't go into overdrive and he says it's only running in 2nd and 3rd with no 1st (limp mode?). Is this a common problem with a common fix or is it time to bring it to the shop for a big dollar fix? He tows plenty and I keep telling him eventually he's going to have to put some $$ into the transmission to keep it going.



He has an appointment at the dealership but I'm trying to find him a good transmission shop here North of Seattle. I don't normally post for troubles with a buddies truck since I like to see everyone buy their own membership but computers aren't exactly the old fellas strong point. Besides, it gives me an excuse to check out the 24V side of the fence .

Doesn't sound to good for the guy. How many miles are on it? I had my 99 for 100k and it never missed a beat and I ran it hard and only flushed it once at 75k. A friend has a 01 and had to have a transmission put in it at 60k and he didn't tow much and always was easy on it, Another friend picked up an 01 aswell and it had already had the transmission done at 9k and the guy had just used it to comute in.

If you look at a service manual (factory type) in the transmission rebuild section I think it would amaze you. The acceptable clearances and tolerances are spread over a wide range. This translates in my thinking to why some dont get hardly any miles from thier transmissions and others get alot more. The guys that are lucky enough to get a tighter transmission have alot more room for wear, as long as the transmissions aren't to tight. The guys that get a looser transmission will wear beyond specifications rather quickily.





As far as the no overdrive it could be a trans temp sensor issue.

My '97 auto crudded out on me at 96,000 miles... . then again it was a 46RE. I went to Jasper and got a reman'd auto and never worried again.

Bought mine w/75k in 01. I got a Mag HyTech DD pan @ 80, adj bands, new filter bla, bla. Changed filter & fluid adj bands @ 105, basically took good care of it and didn't have any power mods. Then around 139k, in spring 05 it started acting like it was slipping on the 1-2 shift I droped the pan and saw

Changed the fluid adj bands new filter. No diff, next weekend drop pan and same thing as pictured only worse



Bombs away $3500 later I had DTT, for a song $$$ I droped in a set of Don's 1. 6 sticks, Edge Comp and made 387H/720T. @ Fall Brawl 06



Trans has been fine, regular service as mentioned above. And recently Spring 07 for another tune $$$$ I got Don's 5 sticks and a HTT 64/14 and made 522H/998T @ Spring Flinf 07 Oo. :-laf



Tell your buddy to stay away from the dealer as all he will get is a bigas bill and the same "stock" trans. If he pulls alot he might do some homework on the aftermarket guys, ATS, DTT, Gorearends etc. Then make his decision, it'll probably cost him less than the dealer would charge anyway and he'll end up with a better trans. Of course I'm partial to DTT but there all good units compared to stock.

He stopped at the dealer and was fed up before they even got his truck in. So he left and went to a transmission shop. It was the solenoids. $400 and he's back on the road for a little longer.
