my 99 ctd has the auto transmission and between 40-50 it shifts in and out of over drive unless you are down on the throttle hard hitting the interstate u are fine but between those speeds it acts like either the torqu converter is lockiing and unlocking or its going from overdrive to a lower gear constantly. any ideas??? :confused:

There is a computer flash that is suspose to fix this problem, it only made mine worse. I did the following

"Unhook both batttery negative cables and clean them throughly leave off for a half hour. Connect them, turn the ignition on without starting the engine, slowly put the pedal to the floor and let it up slowly do this 3 times. Turn the ignition off and then you are done. Start and test it out. "

Trying to find the solution to this problem led me to the TDR, off of the advice here on this one problem I saved myself over $400 that the dealer wanted to replace the TPS which is what they will recomend if you take it in.

99 ctd transmission problem

I have also a 99 ctd 3500 auto transmission which had the same problem . The tcc locking/unlocking , it did it in OD as well as out of OD. The mechanic at my local Dodge dealer did a diagnostic ,(got the extended warranty on it). Went for a test ride and he confirmed the problem .



The following day i get a call from the service rep stating that a reflash was done and a ground cable was cleaned . He stated the problem cleared and no codes were detected and that the truck was test riden. I mentioned that THEY REPAIRED the same transmision problem less than a less than a year a go with only 7k on the repaired transmission and no towing during that period.



The TC was replaced and there is a big improvement in the over all feel of the transmission. Truck drives almost better than new .



The mechanic stated that this is common problem .

well hopefully that will take care of it im tired of that automatic stuff just tired of it miss my 5 speed the only thing that its good for is being able to talk on the phone and drink a coke and smoke a cig at the same time LOL
 
Dpulis, Call Dtt in Abbotsford BC talk to Stephan, My 98. 5 did the same thing and DTT recommended a filter they sell for less than $40 US. I had it within 2 days and it solved the problem. The dealer here in Central Oregon wanted to sell me a APPS too for $418 plus installation and the filter from DTT fixed the problem. It hooks to one wire coming out of the computer on the firewall and sticks to the firewall with double sided tape (I think?) You are getting IMO an electrical spike that is causing the locking and unlocking of the converter. Also I took all my electrical plugs apart and used contact cleaner on them then dielectric grease on them and put them back together. It solved my problem now for 15K miles.
 
a Buddy of mine had the same erratic transmission problem in his 99 CTD 140000 miles Did all the normal stuff , connections, reflash, Dealer who replaced the valve body of the transmission still no fix, then he ran into a retired dodge mech. who told him to change the alternator out, the field coil starts to go bad and sends out stray voltages or something like that, the Dealer in Kenai AK gave him the valve body change out for free cause it did not fix the problem, so my friend went in to buy the alternator and the laughed him and said he is throwing his money away he installed the alternator and immediately his transmission shifting problems went away like night and day he said.
