I had a horse needing hauled a few days ago that I couldn't get to, so my girlfriend borrowed my '99 dually from the friend that I sold it to to deliver the horse.

I was out in NJ coming west and she was heading south down I77 in Ohio heading to Daniels, WV. We ended up meeting in Nitro, WV where she brought a horse that I had back to Ohio.

Anyway, she called me and said that it was losing power climbing hills and I told her that it was probably the fuel filter. She had already called Joyce and she claims that the filter was just changed. The last time I borrowed her truck it was down on power, but I found a cracked exhaust manifold that time ... ... ..... I assumed the same this time. Becky said, nope, it's intermittent, comes and goes!?!

It had the injection pump replaced when I owned it, and the lift pump was replaced when she owned it.

So we met at the barn in Nitro where I was dropping a horse and to give her a horse back to Ohio, and I could continue on to western KY with 2 more horses.

I got in it to pull it up a steep little grade and turn it around, and it did it on me in 1st gear climbing that little grade in the barn lot. It didn't get rough like it was losing a cylinder, it just dropped power for about 30' and then came right back. Almost like someone was pinching the fuel line and then letting go.

Could this be a lift pump? It almost felt electrical to me the way it came and went so sharply.

Does anybody have any suggestions on where to look?

Did to get someone to read the codes. If it has a 216 the VP is going south. Could be a APPS, which is best checked by find a matching truck and swap them and road test. Swap the whole bracket and the APPS together. Fairly easy. SNOKING

I had dead pedal episodes for about a year before ever throwing the 0216code and never had a CEL. Lost 3 lift pumps in that time period too, which sealed my fate. New VP installed at 45k miles and no problems since. Check the codes and go from there.

She hasn't gotten back with me on codes yet.

I had the VP44 replaced under warranty at 96,000, she had the lift pump replaced a little while back.

I sold it to her in Feb of '03 when I got my '03, with 100,000 miles on it. She still only has 140,000 miles on the '99, while I have 299,000 miles on my '03.

On Edit: Should the factory replaced VP44 still be under warranty @ 40,000 miles?

warranty

at 40k miles (yes should be) at 140k miles, I would not think so as it is 5 year or 100k miles on the truck for the warranty. Unless u have an extended warranty or something like that.

I was only curious, she only has 40,000+ on the new pump replaced at the dealer @ ~96,000. The factory original is warranted for 100,000, I suppose the dealer replacement falls under the 12,000/1 year deal.

Anyway, she has the P0216 ... ... ... fuel timing control circuit or something she rattled over the phone. Is there a component of the VP44 that can be replaced, similar to the FCA on the 3rd gen?

The FCA never used to be a replaceable part, it fell under the same part number as the pump ... ... ... . now the pump and FCA are separate, orderable part numbers.

as far as I know the VP is replaced as a whole unit and can not be replaced as "parts. " When mine was changed out it was the whole thing. The electronics are what went on mine too and I think that they are inside the pump, but not sure. Others may know if there are parts that can be replaced vs the whole pump.

I had the 0216 code too in the end and that is the kiss of death for the VP.

Sorry,
