I have a 1999 240k miles) stock diesel 4x4. I drove it in a blizzard to work (shut off for 8. 5 hrs around 10 degrees F) and Drove home 33 miles. Shut it off. (worm garage) It ran like a dream. Two day later I went out to start the truck and it spins over but will not try to start no smoke or anything. (like the old 12v with the fuel shutoff pulled) My fuel pump run (holey fuel pump) I have fuel pressure at the filter with the key on it sprays out the drain when i open it. tried to read the code under the dash got none. (used a cheap one from the neighbors. should the standard scanner work or do i have to buy another one. (I do have a spair ecm)

The cheapie scanner should show any codes, so I wouldn't waste your money there.

This is a long shot, but try swapping out the ASD relay which is located in the PDC (Power Dist. Center) on the driver's side fender under the hood with a known good one (the wiper or horn relay maybe) and see if it'll start.

If that doesn't work, try swapping out the FUEL PUMP (or it could be labeled FUEL INJECTION) relay in the PDC.

After that you might want to try hot wiring the VP44 injection pump. Do a search hear on the forum for instructions on how to do this. If the engine starts and idles, then it might mean a bad ECM. If it doesn't start, it could mean the VP44 has failed.

Do you have a factory service manual for your truck?

Good luck and please keep us posted on how you make out.

try both of them no change. looks like i get to hot wire the truck and see if that works... .

How old is your VP pump? If its stock you might have gotten all she has to give. Try the VP hot wire to see if she will run.

Did the hot wire (could here a click when I hocked it up). Still no go. I have 14 p. s. i. fuel supply out of filter. Sounds like vp44 time. Any other suggestions? Thinking of going with Special X VP44 Upgraded/Rebuilt Blue Chip Injection Pump with NEW Upgraded Computer.

That would be a good choice, only word of caution I heard is if you add a programmer or power box that advances timing you may end up with too much timing. . . in that case go with the standard VP44 from Blue Chip instead.

Did you crack a couple injectors and see if you have fuel there? If it somehow lost prime, it won't start without cracking a couple injectors anyhow.

Also just a quick check make sure Fuse 9 in the fuse panel at the end of the dash isn't blown.

Just to be sure, it just cranks over but doesn't fire, right? Smell any raw diesel smell coming out the pipe at all?

I craked 3 hp fuel line and cranked the heck out of it and it fired right up. (to bad i ordered a hp pump) I'll do some Driving tomarow se if it was just a loss of prime. No leaks outside...

Tubes

Take a look at the problem I had. Identical symptoms. You might still have a lot of life left in your old pump if you're able to return the good pump. IF you have the money to spend... . go for it... BUT you might want to save it for that $5 per gallon fuel coming this summer. :D

I put the new pump on (Special X VP44 Upgraded/Rebuilt Blue Chip Injection Pump with NEW Upgraded Computer). Truck runs Great! It starts with in the 1st 1 sec of cranking. Only drove for about 30min on Iowa blacktop roads (25 degrees) got 23 per my truck. Got lot so snap. So far the BC vp 44 is a good move.

That's weird that it was just a loss of prime. When I did my rebuild I had dry lines and got mine to fire. (I was all alone and didn't have anyone to turn the key for me. ) I had to crank the heck out of it and have a battery charger on hand but I got it to go. It ran REAL rough for a minute or two but it went. I have never had issues after changing filters either. It always fires and then dies but after 15 seconds of cranking or more it always clears the air and runs fine.

Well after replacing my 53 block engine with a Cummins long block. Replaced the fuel filler housing. when its cold out my truck lose prime. I see no leaks. I get 13-15 psi after filter. the truck cranks and tries to fire. if I crank long enough it will start. I can shut it of and it will restart. but 8.5 hr. I have to crank and crank... fuel pump turns on. holy fuel pump.

Are you making oil? (Oil smells strongly of fuel or oil level rises on dipstick?)

If you have no visible fuel leaks on the exterior you may have a leak under the valve cover.

Thinking about it more, does it start instantly and then die, or does it struggle to fire instantly? Trying to determine if you've got a leak on the low pressure side or high pressure side.

Are you sure your grid heaters are working?
