If you have a low pressure side fuel leak the truck should still briefly fire until the fuel is explelled on the high pressure side then it will stall and be difficult to start. If it is leaking down on the high pressure side it would be difficult to start from the get go. Even if the grid heaters are inoperable the truck should still be trying to fire but will be rough running the first few revolutions. I know Iowa can get some cold weather so the colder it is the rougher the start with no grids, but it should still fire. My family has a few old 12 valves on the farm with no cold start aids and they will start reliably down to around 0F. Much below that and they need plugged in.
