Uncle's new Dodge 2500 CTD took a licking! As his son was passing through an intersection lawfully, a driver that was experiencing some type medical condition ran a red light and smacked his truck.

He has two trips planned to pull his 5th wheel in the next 4 weeks. This will put a crimp in his plans!

I am no body guy but that looks like they would total it? Or would they try and fix it? Hopefully the insurance will come through and get a replacement quickly. Good news is, it hit the back of the truck and not the front where the people were. .

First initial 'estimate' from an adjuster was $9,000. I laughed. That might be $9,000 for labor.

It jerked the driveshaft out of the transmission tailshaft.

The wheel and tire alone would be close to $1,000 from an insurance perspective.

My 96 got hit like that, with less body damage. It rapped the driveshaft out of the trans because the RR spring broke and rear was twisted. sorry to say after the dealer fixed it it would go down the street like a crab. Everything measured square, It did not wear tires. On a straight road, if you looked in the LS mirror the side of the truck and line on the road made a triangle!
they could not figure it out, so I sold it and bought my first diesel (the good side of the story :) )

I'd be pushing for a total, the truck will never be right. If by chance they don't total it, I would not write claim off until I was sure the drivetrain was right, that transmission took a real good hit and probably will have issues forever.

Time to trade it in immediately following the repairs no matter how you look at it if they don't total it.

What a shame, at least the hit was aft of the cab/people, could have been worse then. I hope it all comes out OK.
