What is the size of the stock turbo??

Do the years differ in size??

When installing a larger turbo, do you need to modify the waste gate to not overpresurize the system? - inother words does the wastegate have a large enough opening to release the extra volume? Or does the new turbo come with a new wastegate?

With the larger size is there more turbo lag?

Thanks!

Dan

Turbos are two pieces, an exhaust housing and a compressor housing. The cm2 measurement that you see listed is the area of the exhaust housing. On an HX-35 12cm which you have you can run a 12, 14,or 16 exhaust housing. You can go to a bigger housing which will flow more exhaust, reducing EGTs but increasing lag.

To my knowledge adn I could be wrong the only models with different turbos are the 2000-2002 sutos that have a HY-35 with a 9cm housing.

Unless you are going to get a PDR hx-35 you will have to get both halfs of the turbo. Housings come with and without waste gates and waste gates can be set to your specs. If you are going to move up to an hx-40 which has a 4" output you will also have to get a down pipe for your exhaust. Most larger turbos move up to a 4" output.

Thanks Ted

I never realized the size was spec'ed to the exhaust housing.

Do people ever increase the size of the intake housing? If so what size do they "normally" go to?

Am I correct that the main reason for the larger exhaust housing is to allow it to flow a bit better to reduce EGTs'??

Thanks for the explaination - another thing I am learning!

Increasing the intake (compressor) means going to a bigger turbo, yes it is done when power levels hence egt justify it. The next step is the HX40 off the 8. 3 liter engine. A bigger exhaust housing decreases max egt by reducing restriction, but some folks get confused because cruising egt will be a bit higher since boost is a couple pounds lower there.
