Do you like your fuel presure gauge? My concerns...

Painless wiring help

Necessity is the mother of invention. That's one of my all-time favorites.

Anyway, this is so simple it may seem stupid, but it worked like a charm for me. Maybe others have thought of it before?

I needed to refill my NV4500 5 speed, after repairing the overdrive unit, I'd saved the Amsoil gear lube in a clean pan. Using a squeeze bottle as in the past was not an option that appealed to me.

I spied my 1/2 conduit bender in the corner, along with several scraps of 1/2" and 3/4" electrical conduit. :D I took a section 40" long, and "stubbed up" a 90 degree bend on one end.

The stub up amounted to about 5" long, and was just the right size to fit between the 4" exhaust pipe and the side of the transmission, before inserting into the 3/4" fill port on the transmission.

The long end was easy to thread up between the turbo and engine, where I could use a long funnel, just as if it was an automatic transmission fill tube. It worked great, I didn't spill any ! :D

If you know an electrician, and have a 5 speed, get him to make you one!

That is a more permanent solution than I used. My Mag-Hytec cover had included that plastic valve with the short hose. I put on a longer hose, cut off an old oil container for a funnel and routed it the same way. Sure beats a squeeze bottle.

Why not just take the shifter out and dump the oil in from the top? I did that last time on my '95 5-speed and it seemed to work ok.

Great idea.

I have always just heated the oil up so if flows better (I do this on every oil change of any type). Either leave it in the sun for a few hours, or sitting on a cooling engine.

So Tom . . How much Kitty litter did ya have to go through practicing before you had your brain storm HUMMMM

Have fun at Muncie this year, toast a beer this way as I won't be there this year to have one with ya :(

mikel, I usually DO fill a newly installed rebuilt/remanufactured transmission from the top, by removing the shifter. On newer trucks, it's a bit more of a hassle to go through removing the plastic console, especially if the entire transmission hasn't been removed. I didn't remove the transmission for this fix.

On a '95 like yours, there's less stuff in the way.

The tube is a more convenient way to fill the transmission, especially during a simple lube change.

Bummer you can't make it, willys, we'll be thinking of ya ! Kitty litter? :D Heh, the garage floor does get crunchy at times...

I use a 6ft piece of clear tubing(like aquarium air line but bigger) and put one end in the transmission/rear end/t-case or whatever I'm filling and then a funnel on the other and pour it in.

I have the plastic tubing, the inherent curl built into it from being shipped in bulk rolls, makes it messy to work with. :D In other words, it fights back. Still, not everyone wants to chase down an electrician and get this metal tube made, when the plastic tubing is easily purchased at any Lowe's or Home Depot.

:D If you all are looking for a better way to put the fluid into your trannys and pumpkins may I make a suggestion. Go down to your local Sears or Farm Outlet and buy youself the 8 qt plastic pump up weed sprayer. Remove the spay tip, fill it with your favorite lube, give it a couple of good pumps on the handle and then just put the tip of the sprayer (minus the nozzle) into the fill hole and pull the trigger. No muss, no fuss, no leaks and best of all, since you put all the lube in it before you started, no second try at getting messy. Works real good. No motor head should be without one. :D :D ;)

plastic pump is a good idea, like the ones that come with the gallon of gear oil, but the best is to go to Napa and get the pump that looks like a grease gun. They fill quick, have a bendable metal tube, and u can also pull oil out out places too, ... i have found this to be the best method of filling the transmission, dif, and transfer case

I was never happy with the one I have. I would have to dig it out to see who made it. It never seemed to move enough liquid. The other problem I see with using guns and pumps is cross contamination of fluid types. I have an arsenal of dedicated funnels, hoses, etc. I keep them in plastic bags to keep the dirt off and don't worry about cleaning when I change fluid type.

Good call on modifying the weed sprayer, would be easy to clean too. I made up a rig out of PVC pipe and fittings that I use with compressed air. My friends and I call it the Lube Torpedo. Works pretty good. I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

Better yet just buy a hand pump made for the job. Sta-Lube has one for $7 that threads on quart, gallon jugs or you can suck out of a drain pan. Works great.

How about a 12Vdc pump (ShurFlo). Yea it will cost you $50 or $60 but you can by engine oil in bulk and pump it, or any other oil for that matter. Been using this for 3 years and had no problems with the pump.
