Competition New Class

Competition 167 mph/28 sec/One Mile

Piers and were thinking of something a little different for my truck in the Cam department recently, so with them grinding it and me doing the install (my first) the testing has began.

First reports are better spool up for light throttle street driving, more boost at EGT..... (I based this on 900 degrees at acceleration) lower cruise EGT's and less bottom end smoke.

Spool up is just flat brutal to me! WOT runs were scary and with a 3-4 shift at 3800 it never laid over... . eye balls... . sockets... . you get the picture. I ran up to 130+MPH in a blink but don't ask me all the numbers as I was driving with both hands, but 80 psi at 105 degrees intake temp is power in my book... ... ... . I never dreamed that it would ever be this driveable or spool that quick... ... ... . it's fun to chunk it sideways just to test driving skills... ... new tires are in need!

Downside, this was my first cam change and it was a PITA! I had several issues to fix with it, but with a few phone calls, a few afternoons, a few dates, a few busted knuckles, some harsh words at times along with a few thanks and prayers she is back together. The service manual was good to have along with Piers and Brad Ponci to answer the odd ball questions... ... more info to come!

Glad to hear that turned out well. I bet your torque just went from 14XX to 16XX.

Now that its more fun to drive (power comes on before 2900 RPM), how about some more fuel!!!

Jonathan

Hopefully I can get to the dyno before too long and see were the band moved to in the RPM scale. The change is not just a little, it's dramatic in reference to hard spool-up.

I'd just like to say we all know about Piers' but few know about that handsome little devil in Fortuna :-laf It is great to see (from my perspective) guys like you and Brad working so well/closely together it's really nice when people know there stuff, but it's GREAT when they know there stuff AND there GOOD PEOPLE too. Keep up the good work boys!!! Jeff

Ditto, well said Jeff :D

This thing just seems to be getting better as times goes along. Yesterday I was driving along at 70mph, 7-8 lbs boost at 700 degrees bucking a head wind of 25 mph but the air was cold so the intake temp was 60 degrees :)

Under normal conditions is runs at 5psi or so at 725 degrees@70 in O/D

With the air a little colder now you can hold 900 degrees on acceleration and be at 30 psi, valet goes to 55 psi and around 1100 degrees and has plenty of power for normal driving with very little to no smoke. I might try dropping the timing down to 20 and see how much better it drives, but then again I might try 30 Oo.

Your not getting this cam back so don't ask!

Jim

So do you think you crossed into the 900hp range yet?

This was a driveability change, no a HP change. I figure if I put 350-500 miles a week on it I have to look at that... ... ... the truck is too much fun as long as I'm not busting knuckles on it.

Go for the 30*, dyno well over 900, then put it back to 20

Who knows what is best! I need about 4 pulls to dial in timing..... something I've never done. With this combo I'd say 20 is the best for street driving!

What I meant to say was that obviously the 30 is going to dyno higher, and that at 20 its going to drive better... hence lowering your timing back down to 20 after you get through dynoing, for better street maners.

Jonathan

It's at 24 right now and seems to be fine but I do think that 20 would be better suited.

I'm not sure on that timing deal, someone like Dave Dunbar has played with that allot more than me. It might just be better to buy a day on the dyno!

Wow, thanks for the compliment there Jim but I will have to defer that to Mr. Garmon as far as actually making the changes. ;) Some things I believe are left up to the experts... which I'm not.

And BTW, I'd love a day with your truck... to dyno it a few times, write part numbers down, install hidden camera's, voice recorders, g-meters etc... :-laf

Impressive numbers for sure...

The truth is you guys do allot more testing than I do and that testing gives you knowledge. I could run on your dyno and I'm sure I could learn some stuff too but no cameras are needed as I'll talk about most anything. I might do something on the dyno but you guys take it to the track and show it.

Jim

its nice to see someone who is willing to talk about what they run. sure you need competition but we all can learn from those who have been there and done that.

I agree.

Jim, can't wait for the day we get to meet cause I might have a question or 10. ;) :D
