Fellow Rammers:

I have a bad smell come out of blower in either A/C or outside air mode. I'm thinking leaves or something may have been sucked in. Any ideas on fix?

Thanks, Wiredawg

Man ,mine too!!! After I run the A/C, and yes I run just the vent for awile b4 shut down, mine smells like CAT PEE! $31,000 for a truck and the only flawless thing is the Engine!! Where is the drain for the A/C located?

Had the same problem with the bad smell. I tried Lysol and some commercial stuff from an auto parts store. Didn't work.

I read a post on the tdr about running the vent for a few miles before you shut her down. This is done to dry out the condensor.

No more musty smell.

The drain hose from the condensate box on the front of firewall needs to be extended down lower to the frame. When driving the air pushes back up the tube not allowing it to drain properly.

When I went to do mine there was no hose connected. Ran a piece down by passenger door and tie strapped it, SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

I had read that post on shutting the ac down before you get to where your going, it is always better to fix the problem.

RJ2,

I posted on a thread about shutting the AC off before shut down. I agree with you that fixing the problem is best but a little prevention goes a long way.

Since I live about a mile off of a major highway and have to cruise through the neighborhood to get to my house I have gotten into the habit of changing it over when I get off of the highway (when I remember to). I also hit OD off and ease her along to give the EGTs a little time to cool down before I shut her down.

Since I started doing this the smell has reduced significantly. I reckon my next step is to lengthen the hose to see if that helps clear out the last little bit of musty odor that I catch a whiff of occasionally. I will be danged if I will ever start hanging Christmas Tree air fresheners on my mirror to mask the smell.

I haven't looked recently - what size is the drain hose?

I also posted about shutting off the A/C before you get home. I have been doing it for years on all my vechicles. You have to give it 10min. or so to dry out the system before you shut down. The last shut down of the day, before it sits all night is the one that matters.

My father-in-law had his Chevy into the dealer over and over. The clean out procedure they use does not provide a lasting fix.

There is a hose barb on the bottom of the black condensate box hanging on the firewall passenger side. Look down on the bottom , your hose is probaly off also. I think it was 5/8 " ,ran it down and pointed it back and tie strapped it to the frame rail. Mine was really smelling bad so I shut the ac down early for about two days , and it seemed to work a little but was a PITA ,so I did the hose. I never thought about it again.

I also ran a hose down the frame rail, works much better. I mix up some hot water with CASCADE lemon detergent , spray with an air line that also siphons liquid through the bottom of the box on the passenger side. Also hook up a wet vac to the extended drain hose and am constantly amazed at the leaves and all sorts of trash that comes out. Truck smells fresh for about 4-5 months afterwards.
