I was tweaking around with various things on my truck today. As I was cleaning up the tools, I left the truck idling with the defroster on high to dry out the seat because I left the window down in the rain  The hood was still up. After about a 5 minutes of idling, there was a very loud POP, then a wooshing sound, and some mist shooting up from the front of the engine. The sound was freaky, I darn near soiled my shorts

After some investigation I located the cause. The high pressure relief valve on the back of the A/C compressor had blown off. This was caused because I don't have my fan on right now. The condensor wasn't getting cold air, so it wasn't condensing the refrigerant and the pressure kept building. The only way I found out this had happened is because of the green dye put into the system when the refrigerant was changed about a year ago. The dye had sprayed all over the engine mount.

Well, it looks like this won't happen again. ;)

Sean:

This exact thing happened to me last summer but the cause for mine was the fan clutch wasn't doing its job. Replaced with

the correct fan clutch and no more problems.
