I went to replace the idler on my truck and discovered that was not the source of the rattling:mad: It was the A/C clutch bearings#@$%!

Does anybody know if the A/C clutch can be replaced without taking the compressor off the engine. This will be the first one I have seen the clutch bearings go out before the compressor gave up the ghost. Usualy on tractors the compressor goes out first and them you just replace the clutch also.

I replaced mine with Dodge Part Number 4882009 from Bremerton Dodge with out removing the compressor. Found the place on the internet. Local Napa was about 50 dollars higher. I removed the mounting bolts from the compressor to give me some extra room, though. It comes with the pulley, bearing, and clutch pieces. Used a very short and small 3 point puller to get the existing assembly off and replaced everything.

Same here, had just the clutch replace a few years ago. Unfortunatly I paid the dealer to do this so I can't tell you whats involved. Good luck

I have done this. I got the part from the dealer, which included the pulley, clutch plate and coil. The clutch plate was the problem on mine as two of the three spring straps had broken. I did the job with the compressor on the truck and didn't even unbolt it. I had to play with the shims to get the correct air gap on the new parts for some reason. I think I had to remove one shim or something.

Well, it only took me 2-3 weeks, but I finally got it done!

Of course I was doing it in my spare time between working for a guy 8 am till 10 or 11 pm average. We got rained out and I got it finished this morning. I thought the bearing was out, but just 2 of the threes bands were broken, and the coil has some cracks in the sealant with lots of rust in there. Who knows when that woulds have given up the ghost?
