You just have to be able to hold the face to remove the retaining nut in the center. It is metric I believe, in the 12MM range. After removing the nut, the face should slip off, watch for shims on the compressor shaft after removal, if you reuse the same face, you will need the same shims, the air gap for the clutch is . 016 to . 031 in. Sometimes you can energize the clutch (if still operable) and that is sufficient to hold the shaft while removing the retaining nut. b g

I did this several years ago to keep from having to recharge the A/C system.

There is a special tool to hold the electric clutch. I have a brand new one, never opened - came after I had mangled the damaged OE clutch. Mine had lost most of the ball bearings in the electric clutch.

The tool costs about 25. 00 if you need one.

What is it that you are trying to do? Replace the A/C electric clutch?

I used a spanner to hold the face plate while I removed the retaining nut but the face plate is stuck on the shaft. I'm thinking there should be some kind of puller to break it loose. Two of the three spokes on the plate are broken and it never completely clears the pulley at the good spoke, and never completely engages at the bad spokes. It is eating into the pulley and starting to make lots of noise. Time to replace it before it grenades.

Redram, Is what you have a puller or something to hold the plate to loosen the retaining nut?

Thanks for the replies

Rep - My clutch face broke like yours and due to the bearing failing on the serpentine pulley on the A/C Compressor nose. I got the clutch off and pulled the bearing apart with a standard two or three jar puller. Then made a puller with the old clutch center.

While doing this over a period of three days, I found the correct puller and ordered it from an on-line A/C parts house.

I'll have to find it or the improvised puller. you also need to have snap ring pliers to be able to replace that bearing as that is what holds the system in place.

Are you trying to do this "in place' on the truck or have you removed the compressor from the truck?

I did mine still connected and it wasn't the best setup - ended up doing the KDP as since I had half the front of the truck disconnected, it didn't take much more to pull the fan and water pump and timing cover.

I could send you the puller on Monday if that helps - I am in Houston.

Any trick to removing the a/c clutch face? I don't have the special tool, I don't even know what the tool looks like.

I made a puller to remove the driven plate on my ac as it to was or had a broken spring and was making a noise.

I priced around and I did not like what I was being told, but as luck would have it I found a place in Dallas area that had the part I needed at a good price. They are also on ebay for ac parts, www.teckchoiceparts.com 972-723-0112 got the parts overnight and no extra. I could have just ordered the plate but I wonted to replace the entire part to change out the bearing also. regards jimk

I found this on my computer today - I had downloaded this while fixing my A/C. It's a 33 page Sanden compressor manual in pdf format.

http://www.sanden.com/support/pdf/sd7servicemanual.pdf

Tha above link will give you detailed instructions on the A/C Compressor. What I have is item #3, either a home made version or a brand new still in the package tool.

Let me know if I can assist if you're still working on this

Thanks

Thanks everyone for all the replies, help and links. I made a puller to remove the face plate, now I am just waiting for it to stop raining.

Sounds like this is a pretty common problem, but mine did go over 200k miles before it broke
