Started up my truck, put in in reverse and BANG! Sounded like I ran over something. The next morning, it did it again. I fiannally found it to be coming from under the hood. I think it is the clutch on the a/c compressor. Is this something that Dodge can repair or do I have to wait until its 110 degrees and the a/c quits? Anyone else noticed this problem? Any luck with the dealer?

Thanks:)

Do a search on here and you will find that a lot of us have this clunk. Someimes its louder then sometimes it don't make much noise. I think I noticed it on the 00 I had. 03 did it some and the 04 does it some.

Big clunk. Ever since new. Sometimes it sounds like the compressor is going to come flying up through the hood.

My '04 just started doing it the other day. !CLUNK! Hopefuly it doesn't quit working, we just hit triple digits here in the Tri-Cities. I'd really be  if it stopped working next month, when I move down to Arizona, in dead heat of summer!!!

my 01 didn't do if so couldn't hear it. new 04. 5 does almost every time haven't found the sound sorce I thought it was coming from the rear could be wrong most of the time i am wrong

My 04 dose it also. When I use the a/c the first time of the day it is ok. It seams to be worse after shutting engine off with a/c on and then starting it back up after a few minutes. A real hard hit!

Mines real loud too, sometimes sounds like it's coming from the back because it travels through the frame. I don't think it's a problem, maybe just a symptom of a big compressor.

As I said above my 04 does it too. Yesterday I got in the daughters Jeep Liberty V6 to take it to the dealer for a recall on it and when I turned on the AC there was a slight clunk not as loud as the Dodge. Probably the same style of compressor as the Dodge but just smaller and I think I heard the wifes Honda do it before might be different type of freon they are using.

its a common problem. It wont hurt anyting. What happens is when the ac is shut off sometimes the head pressure doesnt equalize from high side to low side and it takes more effort from clutch to rotate on first engagement. I have'nt seen one fail because of it.

Someone that works on them

And there you have it. I knew someone would come up with the answer. Thanks JGoodwin.
