2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission a/c compressor replacement

Im getting a quote to replace the a/c compressor. I'm sure the shop that is getting me the quote would provide an aftermarket compressor. I think I've read that there can be a high early failure rate with at least some of the aftermarket stuff. Does anyone know of any in particular to stay away from ? Or to get ?

Not to scare you, but I have had ZERO luck with aftermarket compressors on my company vehicles, had one S-10 that would not go 6 months on an aftermarket A/C compressor. Tried Carquest, NAPA, etc... .

Switched to OEM and have a lot better luck.



I won't sell aftermarket ones for the big trucks either, only Freightliner branded (which are quality units such as Sanden, CCI, Red Dot, etc. ). Also the proper oil in the correct quantity has to added to the compressor and if it has a drier than that needs to changed as well.

I am not sure if accumulator style systems require a change, maybe someone a little more knowledgeable will clear that up for us.

Freightliner will deny warranty coverage unless you have a receipt proving that the drier was purchased the same time as the A/C compressor.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably end up just supplying them with an OEM (although I'm not thrilled with the OEM that came with the truck).

I called a couple of dealers and it sounds like what they would supply would be reman. Have you had good luck with those ?

reman compressors suck, once in a blue moon you get one that outlives the warranty and actually performs properly, otherwise they either grenade throwing crap into the system or just kinda work not really blowing cold air just cool, heres a new one Dodge Ram 5. 9L Cummins Diesel Brand New OEM Sanden AC A/C Compressor w/clutch | eBay like i put on my truck, i don't trust chinese accumulators either as i have cleaned up the mess when one lets go, the desiccant bag ruptures and it spreads through the system, if it gets into the condenser its gone as you will never get it clear, but it will have gone through the compressor to get there and toasted it first

I put a four seasons on my mega and it worked great for the 3weeks before I totaled it, ac was colder then ever! The factory mopar compressors don't seem to hold up or work well

A week or so ago I called a few dealers to get a price on a brand new OEM compressor. Every one that I called said that all they could get were reman. (for 2002). Well, just for grins, I called a different dealer this morning. They gave a a price (installed) for just over a grand. I asked him if it was brand new or reman, and he said it is brand new. Was he lying to me ? I was under the impression they were no longer available.

I installed a Four Seasons (brand new) May 2011. Works great. 40 degrees in this hot Texas sun. Follow the instructions for break in, I believe it was turn the compressor on and off twenty-five times to burnish the piston and cylinder walls. Four Seasons is a bit more money, but made in the USA and NEW!

Im having the compressor replaced on monday with an OEM comp. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what comp fit the 02 truck ? In other words, is this new OEM comp one that also works in the 03 and newer ?

Sanden was OEM for the diesels (Third Gen anyway); some other Dodges came with Denso. I got a Denso and it works great. I heard mixed reports on Four Seasons.

It's a crap shoot on any of the reman or aftermarket. I got a good one for my '97, and after 4 years, not a problem one. I got another compressor for my '88 Verstatile, and it only lasted 2 years, albiet they covered it under warranty from Orielly's..... Another customer I put one on for has had one 4 years and almost 300k on it, and it leaks a little, and has to be topped off every summer, but other than that, it works fine, still... . Yet another customer had one that didn't last to the end of last summer..... I got stuck with labor, Orielly's covered compressor and drier, but I still had to evacuate, flush, and recharge the system.....



I think 2000+ is the same compressor. I believe it's a Sanden. Earlier trucks had NippoDenso.....
