is my compressor supposed to run constantly?

when i turn my a/c on my compressor comes on an stays on. every once and a while it will cycle on and off. is this normal? if there's a problem is there a solution? thanks..... james:D

At idle and temperatures above 75 deg. F, it would not be unusual for the compressor to stay on for a while. There is a clutch cycling switch screwed into the side of the accumulator which controls the on/off cycling of the compressor. The compressor cuts off when the pressure is down around 20#. You may have to hook up a suction presure gage to determine if the switch is working correctly. bg

There are a great deal of variables with compressor run time. It is supposed to cycle on and off depending on the load (how hot/cool is the cab) If the cab isn't cooling and the compressor is running continuously a leak more than likely is present. Leaks must be found, fixed and then properly charge the system. Feeding refrigerant to a leaking system is like feeding a small animal, it will grow and require more feeding.

If the cab is cooling and you are comfortable. MHO don't fix it - it's probably not broken.

If you are tooling down the highway and the cab isn't cooling have the system checked. Usually a big radiator shop has a Tech that knows what to look for with A/C systems.
