My air conditioner has quit working and after investigation, I discovered that the clutch mechanism is loose and it has spun to the point of wearing the little "studs" off. Now the outer plate cannot hook the "studs", and just spins past them. Has this happened to anyone else and can it be repaired without removal of the compressor?

You can replace the clutch by itself, I just went through this on my '95. The clutch is avaliable from the dealer and is right around $200. It can be changed with the compressor on the truck, you need to be careful and patient with it, but it can be done. I had to make a puller to get the "clutch disk" off the front of the compressor, but after removing the snaprig the pulley came right off with careful application of two pry bars opposite each other.

If you can get the correct tools to do this job, it might be easier but like I said, if you're careful and patient with it you should do ok.

Good Luck,

Mike
