How not to haul a camper

I know this has been rehashed a few times but what gives? I'm looking at buying a new truck soon, test drove a mega the other day in 90 degrees and partly cloudy conditions. We drove for about 20 minutes, in my opinion the A/C never adequately cooled off the interior. Idled in the parking lot for a while, and no cooler. This was with the A/C on full blast recirculate the whole time. Truck was a low mileage (1200) demo type deal, 5. 9 Laramie, '07. Drove a 6. 7, similarly equipped though it was cloudy outside, a bit cooler and A/C seemed to work just OK. Love the cummins, just not enough to sweat my *** off the whole time driving it in a southern summer.

Check out a couple of other threads on this subject... I have a 2006 megacab and agree the A/C isn't what it needs to be. Some say the factory didn't properly fill the amount of R-134, some have over pressurized the system to get the A/C cooler, some have blower issues. Plenty to read, probably one of the biggest gripes I have on this truck...

Outside air temp finally climbed high enough lately for me to offer an opinion. My 06' Mega has no problem. Once truck interior has cooled down I have to move the fan to the 1st setting. It gets too cold otherwise. Just had an AC line at the compressor changed by the dealer. It was causing a restriction which caused a thump everytime the compressor kicked on. AC before/after repair has been great.

My truck is also white with dealer tinted windows. Also have a white canopy.

The white HAS to be a big help. My Inferno red MC is marginal. I just bought an AC thermometer and am going to play with it. Anyone know what the temp at the vent(s) should be?

While this has been discussed in other threads, I will throw in my observations. My '06 Mega AC has never blown hard air. I know there are issues with the recirc door breaking. My truck has been in the dealer once with "no problem found" (don'tcha love it when they say that?). I did check and the door appears to be working fine (not broken). However, my AC still makes a lot of noise while moving very little air (although the air is nice and cold).

I spoke with my service guy last week about it again and he did state that they have a "redesigned" recirc air box that they have had to put into a number of new trucks recently. Mine goes in tomorrow, so I'll let you know what happens.

Kevin this maybe the redesigned box with the "stop" for the door that breaks. If it is not the same, but a real new box please let us know the part number ASAP. also if it helps at all.

thanks, in dire need of good AC jason.

Well, I'm sitting at the dealer and have just been told that my AC has no problem found. So, it appears that a lot of noise and little airflow is as designed. I did ask about the "redesigned" box and they did state that it is just the one with the door stop.

I'm getting quite frustrated with this. I know it is a common complaint on these trucks and I hope the Dodge can come up with a fix soon.

Mine was really bad last summer. The fan makes a bunch of noise, but you don't seem to get much airflow. .

Had an accident over the winter and as part of the repair the AC system had to be re-charged... Has made night/day difference in the trucks ability to cool the cab. .

Still don't think the amount of air flow put out is enough, but it is a lot colder now. .

I had to have mine recharged the day after i picked it up. dont know if it made a difference, air is cool, not cold, volume of air sucks

Has anyone checked to see the voltage applied to the fan motor? Wonder if the wiring is not quite right. Some voltage drop across wiring should be normal. However, excessive voltage drop would cause slower fan speed. There has also been some discussion on the switch mechanism sending a faulty or intermittent signal. Mine did this one time. Fan would blow lots of air somewhere(?). After work everything was back to normal. Maybe yours stayed broke.

I have an '07 inferno red Mega Cab. My A/C makes lots of noise and the volume of air is not what I call adequate. I had a friend that drives a ford ride in my truck with the A/C at max and he even commented that it sure makes a lot of noise and not much air. I don't like the vents in this truck as much as my '03. The little slats that direct air don't seem large enough to direct it to where you want it.

My air seems to be cold, but I can only imagine how much better it would be if it really pumped out a good breeze!

It takes my truck about 20 minutes to cool the cab to where I turn down the fan in 90 degree heat. If I take it to the dealer, I'm sure they'll tell me there's nothing wrong and that with a cab that big, it'll take longer to cool down. I say BS because an SUV has a smaller area than my cab and it doesn't take that long to cool off. I just bought a Mopar sunshade specifically made for the pickup and I'm going to tint the windows. Maybe that will help a little.

My biggest complaint on the AC, other then lack of air flow, is that I can't get the vents in the middle of the truck to blow at my face.

Only neck down is kind of annoying and makes the AC feel even less effective. I will have to see if I can modify the vent mechanism to allow more travel so it will go up enough to hit my face.

I was very concerned about the quality of the AC systems in these trucks before I purchased my '06. I live in Houston and as you know the heat can be unbearable. I guess I ot lucky because the AC my truck will freeze my wife and I out of the front seat and the back seat passengers get plenty of air, although I wish there were ducts in the back. Maybe the humidity here has something do do with it feeling cooler? I havent put in a thermometer yet, but I think I might just to compare with what you guys find.

Ditto for everything you said, especially the stupid little vents they put in. I also had an '03 and they were a lot better. Whoever designed these ought to be sent back to design school.

The difference is you have a Quad Cab, not a Mega Cab. You have a smaller area to cool, and the ductwork for your truck is different.

FWIW, I just completed a 3,000 mile trip from Seattle, wa to Cheyenne, wy and encountered some high temps. A/C was awesome, worked perfectly, great circulation and very cool temperatures coming from the vents. Didn't take long after getting in the truck before I had to turn the fan to the lowest setting, and actually increase the temp of the air using the dial. Truck is '06 QC 2500 BH LB SRW 4WD in gray.

I have a 06 Mega 3500 mineral grey. I live in Sacramento CA where it routinely gets above 100 during the summer months. The air coming out of the vents is cold and the entire cabin gets cool in no more than 10 minutes. It gets so cold that my wife and kids always ask to turn the A/C down. However, I have to agree that the fan makes a lot more noise than volume of air moved. I believe the problem is the design of the fan/box assy. Unlike a regular fan like the fan behind the radiator, A/C fan is centrifugal in design. The more you restrict the flow, the faster it turns. My guess is the box has flow restriction somewhere in the air path causing air cavitations. This in turn causes the fan to spin faster but not move more air. I am not an automotive A/C expert. My knowledge is from commercial refrigeration system.

I have the same issue as most of you. My a/c blows cold but the air flow is marginal at best. Yesterday here in central calif it was only 90 degrees and i had to run my ac on high or 1 click below that to keep the interior cool. And that was driving for 1 hour 45 minutes:eek: All my rear windows are tinted as is a front visor strip. I'm not holdin my breath for dodge to correct this problem. Hopefully someone here will find our problem so we all can address it ourselfs.

I have a 06 Mega and same thing, very little air movement, the driver side vent by the door acts like it gets half the air the rest do. I will say I think the charge is correct because after driving down the hiway for 30 minutes I have to turn the blower way down, but the first 30 miles are miserable. #@$%!
