When I have run my a/c for a while the fan speed seems to slow. I can still hear the fan but little to no air comes out of the vents. I turn off the fan for a minute and turn it back on and it will work for another 10 min or so. It gets unbearable for a few moments while I wait for it to reboot. I am assuming that a door is shutting on the fan. It only seems to happen when the a/c is on. The fan will roar on high but no air will come out. Is there a easy fix. I don't want to take it to a local dealer as the Service mananger is a complete jack***.

Thanks CR Toney

Try running the fan on high and see if it still does it... . you might be freezing up the unit and blocking the air flow with ice... when you reboot it, the ice melts and it works for a bit...

Low freon (134a) can cause it to ice up...

A couple of checks you might consider... with it running is it dripping water on the ground... . that is, is the drain clear... This is really important if your in a high humidity location...

I'd say almost for certain the evaporator core is freezing up. Mine does it too, after running for awhile (maybe 30 minutes?) it will freeze completely.

To remedy, I just switch off the A/C compressor for several minutes until the ice melts. I still get cold air during this time, since it's blowing across the ice on the evaporator.

As jelag points out, a refrigerant recharge would probably fix it. Mine isn't bad enough yet for me to do anything about it.

I guess that is what I might try. Top up the refridgerant a bit and see what happens. The old r12 sure worked better in our tractors we have switched to the Redtek 12a which is hydrocarbon based stuff which cools really well. Thanks guys.

MYT truck has been doing the exact same thing-- It works until frozen, I thaw it, etc.

I went and bought a can of refrigerant that has a guage and it said it was overcharged slightly.

Mine does it when it's a really humid day and I have it drawing fresh air in. When it's on recirculate, it won't do it.

The refrigerant/temperature control is controlled by the low pressure switch, so if your freezing the coil, your low pressure control is not opening the circuit to the compressor clutch and allowing the pressure to go below freezing for R134a. I had that happen on my 94 2500 and it destroyed the evap coil. I would get it in the shop and not use it until repaired. When water freezes it expands and can destroy your coil the very first time it happens, however it can freeze up several times before it effects the coil.

Unfortunately the evaporator is buried under the dash and can cost a lot of money to replace. I had to remove the whole dash from my 94 and replace the evaporator, because I did the work myself it did not cost as much as it could have. You will need a good set of gages to properly check for this, the pressure switch is easy to replace, so I would replace it first if I did not have the tools to check it out. The control is set for the proper pressure and because of a check valve below it, when you remove it, you will lose hardly any refrigerant if any. Note: make sure that check valve exists before you remove it, it is there on the 94 trucks.

There is a remote chance you have a restriction at the refrigerant control (not to be confused with the pressure control) and could cause the over charged condition per the tool and freeze up as well. I am a AC contractor and would rather have an auto technician check it out first, but I can afford it and you know the old saying "time is money".

I hope this helps

A/C freezing up

I had the same trouble on my '03 at about 60,000 miles, it was low on

freon due to a leak in the condenser. A/C operated ok in town,

but on the highways it would freeze up in 10 minutres. Try adding some

freon instead of doing nothing, you may be lucky enough to go several

months without having to add freon again.

I talked Chrysler into repairing mine, but you've probably gone too long now,

you're looking at $1200 to $1400 in repairs unless you can do it yourself.
