A Dogs Prayer

By Beth Norman Harris

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

see my newfie thread hemi it says it all here is my all time favorite. "i explained to st peter id rather stay here, outside the pearly gate. i wont be a nuisance, i wont even bark, ill be very patient and wait. ill be here chewing on a celestial bone, no matter how long you may be,id miss you so much if i went in alone , it wouldnt be heaven for me" it sure will be nice to see all of my friends again.

My young pup just ate my hot tub cover. No I didn't beat him,but had a hard time not justifying the pound. He has my backyard looking like a junkyard. Has found firewood pile and thinks it is great to play with. Anything that can be chewed will be chewed. But when I look in his eyes all I see is"Sorry I love you". Told him last week that I was taking him to the pound, even had it planed. I swear he knew what I told him!Just moupped around for a week. I couldn't do it. Nobody would want him,he's a pit/hound mix(huge)and with the latest dog scares nobody wants that type of dog. So I'm stuck with him I guess. Or is he stuck with me?

The "Rainbow Bridge" Every pet we have ever had is waiting patiently outside the Pearly Gates for us to arrive. When our turn comes and we join them we will all cross the "Rainbow Bridge" into the promised land together. Heaven just wouldn't be the same without our always faithful companions.

Champane Flight... if he's still a pup, just give him time, the chewing will go away when he matures. My Saints chewed everything in sight till they out grew that stage. I looked at it as a great way to lose a few of the kids extra stuffed animals #ad

I hear you on that chewing thing, I've got 3 60 pound puppies all a little over a year old. They are clearing my side yard of all trees and brush quite nicely. It can get pretty frustrating at times.

On the other hand, when I leave the house for 5 minutes and come back the wife looks at me like "you back already", the dogs (and my daughter) say "DAD'S BACK YEEHAWWWW". Gotta love them kids and dogs. The 2 cats and 3 horses are ok too.

PS - that is a great piece of writing, the last paragraph is a stinger, went through that a couple years ago with a dog we had for 12 years.

Big saint,He is doing a little better since we had a chat. And I don't think I could take him to the pound. Now if I could just get him to stop digging, crapping, and jumping on the doors. It has been a long time since I had a puppy. I forgot they are just like kids you have to work with them. I don't think the crapping is going to stop though. I just have to kiss my backyard goodbye And put up a big fence,so the world can't see it. Gotta love it.

Champane Flight... Glad to hear he's better after the "chat". I've had many heart to heart talks with mine and it does seem to help. Now, onto to another issue... scooping up... have any idea how much two Saints put on the ground day in day out ? I need to hire a full time guard, armed with a snow shovel and a pick up stick, to keep up with these morons. I go out every morning and pick it up. Everytime they go out there's more on the ground. My dogs are kept indoors except when we take them out for play or to when they need to "lighten the load", then they go out on seperate runs built with heavy duty cable. This limits where they go but not how much I pick up. They eat about 100 Lbs. of dry and 25 cans of "wet" food each month combined, guess it's gotta go somewhere. Atleast it's not on the carpet anymore #ad

A few years back we had a dog that was part of the family. She developed Lukiemia, we had her treated and she was comfortable for about another 1 1/2 years. Then the time came to let her go. Was one of the hardest things I ever tried to do. I say tried because I loved that dog so much I couldn't do it when the Vet came over to the house. My wife was the one to hold her. Have had several other dogs that were just about as bad but they were older and had good long lives.

Hemi, I know what you mean about the lump in the throat! Got the darn thing now.

This pup just showed up on our doorstep one day. We have had our old dog for many years now "Boodro". He is a people pleaser, with just a one bad habit(digging). I built a dog run and fully insulated house for him years back. He is purely a outdoor dog. Just can't stand to be in the house for more than a few minutes. My wife had a little Pug for awhile, when we lost him her heart was broken. When the pup showed up on our front porch, she fell in love again. So did Boodro,he didn't like the Pug that well(humping his leg thing). But he and the pup have a ball playing and wrestling in the backyard all day. It is fun to watch. It won't be long before the pup gets the upper hand. Just a growing boy. Well have to drive to Ft. Collins to get a new hottub cover today. Tommorow put a gate on the deck. This spring will see a frozen dog poop festival!

Champane, go to the butcher and get him a big soup bone or knuckle bone (3 bucks max) give him it raw and every time you see him chewing it tell him "good boy" in the highest sweetest voice you can hit (yank your shorts up if you must). Dogs are smart and he will soon learn that the bone is o. k. to assault. A stern "NO" if you catch him on your stuff... . and for gods sake don't give him an old shoe. #ad
I have been training dogs for a while now with much success, yes even those so called "dumb a$$ dogs. They really wanna please you.

I take my older Standard Schnauzer to rest homes... those old folks really turn on! It's a real heartwarmer often darn near tear jerker! #ad

Hey Big saint, how do you get the pup to eat the bone?I have a old Boodro dog that thinks anything in the backyard(especialy food) belongs to him. Major dog fight this morning and a bone was given to both dogs. I told Boodro that Teeger was going to grow up and beat the snot out of him. But to no avail he(Teeger)will not go close to the bone since the a$$ whoopin. Maybe I will have to seperate before bone presentation?

New hot tub cover and new gate to deck. Dogproofed. Teeger knew he had done something wrong, when old cover was being dumped he hung his head.

"Dogs and Trucks"... . Years ago Mom and I moved to the hills outside of L. A. , my mother in law (Theatre, hold you pinky out when you eat type) went nuts. I remember her saying "Mike, next you'll be driving a pick up truck with a dog in the back". D**n that gal was more right then I ever thought! Man I love her daughter! #ad

There are a couple of good essays out written by owners of labs. Good for bringing a tear to the eye of even the most hardcore. Part of being a pet owner is knowing when it is time to say goodbye and being there. As you guys who have been through it know, it is quick and peaceful. Always worse for the owner. Try saying goodbye to a horse one time. A horse can live 20-30+ years depending on the breed, etc. They have a presence that is just as tough to let go. Not to mention that putting them down is not so easy as a dog. For those who don't know, they need a seditive/tranquizer first then a shot to stop the heart. I had to put down a seven year old that I had kept going for two years even though it was hopeless. I just wanted her to have as much chance at life as possible. The Ram's, Ferds, etc come and go but family, friends and pets make life worth living.

My best freinds old childhood buddy (Champ)was getting old and was having a hardtime getting around. His Dad told the family that it was best that he took the dog out and put it down. So one fateful day He loaded Champ and his 30-30 up and headed up in the hills. My freind and I sat around the house and balled, carried on with his Mom and sister. His Dad was the type of man that meant what he said and never failed to carry out anything he set out to do. We just knew it was the end of Champ.

Well the day pasted and still no sign of his dad. Finally we heard the old pickup coming up the drive. We all slowly went out(just to give him the evil eye). And low and behold there was Champ in the front seat of the pickup with his dad singing. He should have been the one driving cause my buddys dad was drunk as a skunk. Later after several cups of coffee he admited that everytime he pointed the gun at Champs head,he couldn't do anything but take another drink from the bottle he picked up on the way to the execution. Champ finally died of natural causes two years later.
