looks like i am getting a drip or tow from the area near where the flat plate/shield is located... ... are there bolts that need to be tightened under there? do i need to watch for anything in particular? is that the trans area or the transfer case area? thanks. scott.

Mine's doing the same thing. I am thinking that it is the seal between the two halves of the transfer case. As far as I know, there is not gasket there, just Permatex. It hasn't gotten bad enough to pull it apart yet, but it is on the to do list.

Hey Scott... ... Just think... ... ... If it wasnt for the TDR ,You would still have all those questions unanswered and corked up in your head. I'd pull the guard off and wash everything with some degreaser or even Dawn liquid (works pretty good). Then you should be able to see just where its coming from. I read one tip about using spray foot powder to spot those small pesky leaks. Good luck with it.

That sounds just like what I saw when the front seal on the transfer case started to go. I drove it like that for about eight months before I got around to fixing it.

It's pretty straight-forward.

I dropped the front driveshaft and removed the companion flange nut with a 1 1/8" socket. Tap the flange off with a soft mallet. The manual says you can't reuse the nut, but I know those that have. Under the nut is a rubber washer that slips over the shaft. Some people have fixed the leak by just replacing this washer, but I figured I might as well replace the seal since I was this far in. Pull the seal with whatever method works for you. You need to find something to drive the new seal in with other than a standard seal driver, since the shaft is still sticking out of the case. I used a piece of copper pipe with an OD of 2 3/4" that I had. The manual is very specfic that the seal must be seated . 08 to. 10 in. below the seal bore. I didn't apply any sealer to the outside edge of the seal, but I have heard some guys needed to do this in order to get the leak stopped. Install the companion flange and torque the new nut to 130-200 ft. lbs.
