hey guys, if i could pick your brain for a moment. I am currently doing a study on the performance and the maintenance of diesel engines on bio diesel. Can any of you let me know what you have found when using bio diesel, b20 is fine, things like performance differences, fuel economy differences, pump and injector wear is there any or is it improved lubricity. Do you use more fuel filters, is water in the fuel a prolem? are egts any different hotter/ cooler, and anything else you might have noticed. Thanks for your help it deeply appreciated. Smokin Ram

Smokin,

I have run some biodiesel in my 96 Dodge Cummins. It has 397,000 Miles on it, have not had a problem. I am not currently running BD in it, don't have room in garage to make it and they just don't sell it around here much. When I did run it I saw very little difference in performance. I never ran over 50% Bio in it. The only difference I did see was less smoke and a differnt exhaust smell. Also the oil got black slower on Bio than on straight Dino Diesel. I think lubricity is better with Bio than straight Dino and therefore longivity of the engine would be enhanced with the cleaner oil and better lubricity of the fuel. I run Shell Rotella oil and have run a bypass filter most of the miles on the truck. I have been running a Puradyne and am presently in the process of installing a Frantz bypass filter.

I have run b100 for a total of about 20K miles, I saw a small hit in my mpg and the rest of my experiences are like those of KB0OU. I really think it is the way to go, since it makes your truck a low emitter (the CO2 and NO are already in the carbon cycle and not from the ground), and I feel much less guilty about my BullyDog/Banks/Injectors and other toys!

Rattle on!

I run B20 every 3rd tank or so. I don't notice a significant difference between BD and petrol diesel. I do get slightly better fuel economy and it smells a little difference. I don't push my truck hard so I don't notice any power differences.

I have been running B20 in a 95 and 98 since fall. I have seen no problems at all. Fuel economy is 1-2mpg better than winter #2. Much less smoke from the #6 plates and a better smell also. Our supplier was down several weeks ago after getting complaints from Dmax owners about hesitation problems during a cold snap. He mixed an additive into 7k gals of B20 and it caused a problem. My trucks mileage dropped again on #2 during that time.

I haven't seen any problem with fuel filters,EGTs or power so far. My 98 is in the shop for a timing reset and 3K GSK. I will report back on how it runs on B20 with a timing reset soon.

Keep it coming!!

Thanks guys, great to hear its working out for you, and that were taking a positive step toward a better enviromental future and one step away from the oil tycons... . Keep the testimony comming if you could, all the help and ideas i can get would be great!

Support our farmers!!! Use bio diesel!!!

Farmers dont just feed cities anymore. . they power your truck!!

I have run B20 for a few tanks now. I love the stuff. I want to go to B100 this summer.

Us guys w/ advanced timing (more than OEM) might notice a slightly rougher idle compared to #2. It's hardly noticeable.

bio-diesel

Hi, We have run many thousands of gallons of bio in our fleet of trucks, tractor and other construction equipment. In some cases it is even b100, but mostly b20. I have found that it give about the same power a old #2, but burns much cleaner and has almost a food smell to it. It does cause trouble with older equipment that has sat for sometime and has dirt or other particles in there fuel tanks, Bio will clean the tank and run this stuff in to the filters and plug them. Once this has happened and you have change out the plugged filters it works great. The only other thing I will add is that when it first came on the market, it would gel at about 15 degrees. Adam
