Well guys, I have been driving my truck since 12-20-02, and monitoring it's little quirks and operating characteristics since I've owned it. After watching this forum steadily for about a year now, it seems that I am encountering a few things that nobody else has mentioned. I will throw these out there to see if anyone has any experiences of their own.
#1 (and most annoying right now): Since about Feb. , the truck has developed a belt squeak that has gone from very intermittant to constant as of today. Used to be a real slight chirp-chirp as the truck sat at idle, and was noticed only when the engine was hot. Now when the truck is started cold, it is a very loud CHIRP-CHIRP, and when accelerating the engine above idle is it a constant loud SCREECH. Real impressive driving through traffic with a $40K truck and people in other cars are looking around in panic trying to figure out where that terrible noise is coming from. Dealer has ordered a new belt and tensioner, of course the parts are coming from the National warehouse and wont be seen til early next week. In the meantime I wont be driving it too much as it is just too darn embarrassing/aggravating for me to deal with. Ill be driving my wife's car until the parts are here.
#2(slightly less aggravating but not much): Fuel gauge is been acting up off and on since new. First time I encountered it was filling up the tank while the engine was running back in Feb. Fuel gauge would not move at all, even though it was full. After driving about a mile, I pulled off and shut off the engine, let it sit for about 30 sec, and then re-started. Gauge jumped right up to full. I chalked it up to filling with the key on and never thought twice. Now the last 2 times I have put fuel in it has done the same, both times the key was off. One time it was filled to full and came back up after cycling the key, yesterday I put in only about 6. 5 gallons and the needle still hasnt moved from near empty (low fuel light is on).
#3 (aggravates the wife more than me, but is still annoying): I have noticed the engine rpm's surge at idle. Not noticeable on the tach but is very audible. Sounds like the "romping" idle problem the Ferd guys have been talking about. It is a constant up-down-up-down sound from the engine that is worse in the cab than it is outside the truck. Seems worse when the engine is cold, but I think that is due to the extra load put on the engine by the grid heaters. If the truck is driven for a long distance and gotten good and hot, it is almost not noticed. It also is worse when the outside temp is colder. I have attributed this condition to have been possibly caused by the Edge EZ, it seems to have popped up right after it was installed. Edge sent me a replacement box that seems better, and after talking to Rod at Wildcat Diesel it seems that I may need to try yet another box to see if that will cure it. It seems that although the box is not supposed to have any effect on the engine at idle speed, something in the programming of it is effecting only a few certain trucks. We will see what happens with the 3rd box. (Thanks to Rod at W. D. for the great customer assistance and advice!)
OK people, sorry this is so long, but I could really use a few words of wisdom from the pros. I guess I am too much of a perfectionist, these little niggles really bum me out. I think I need to go over to the Ferd forum and cheer myself up a bit!!!
