One of the Saloon Pards came by today to show me his new ride, F650 XLT 4 door Allison, Cummins powered.

I was interested in the Cummins & Allison Trans more than anything else. I do have to say that the Ford truck with the XLT package is a pretty nice looking rig. He got the straight frame so all he had to do is add an Aluminum deck with some side boxes. I have seen lots of Dodges, none with as nice a interior as the Ford.

He & his wife haul high dollar horses around the country to race tracks and shows. We took the truck for a ride it runs sweet, For a Ford :-laf is what I told him. Cant let him go without a few digs about it being a Ford not a Dodge. He had no weight in the trailer but it was pretty heavy I would think, its one that has the living space in front so they have a place to hang out until the event is done and then they haul back.

Not bad. I think that if I was looking for a new ride the drive train is the way to go. My opinion is a little one sided I haven't been in a Dodge with the Big Auto Trans so I'm only guessing that it would be close to the same idea, just not as heavy of a truck. Has had the truck back to the dealer one time in almost 25,000 miles that they have on it, and it was for a computer change not because of something mechanical.

I have looked in the 4th gen and I don't think that's happening for the Dodge Guys, So what's the difference? is it set up differently because of the truck weight being more? or just luck of the draw? I would assume that the Exhaust filters would be the same with the Cummins in both of the trucks

Anyway just thought that some of you are truck enthusiast and like to hear about ALL Types of trucks.

If you want one ya better get one this year! Next year it will be 6.7 powerstroke powered with the Ford auto, only....no Cummins or Allison...

Was it next year or this year? At last years Auto Show they had an F650 with the same combo (6.7 Cummins/Allison) and the rep said that was the final model year a Cummins would be in a Ford.

To bad that they ALL have that DAMN exhaust crap. I liked the Allison trans, a little hard on shifts but hey its a truck not a Cadillac. Plenty of power which I imagine is the same whether its in a Dodge or Ford the Cummins is a nice SUPER QUIET motor in this case.

I have all that I need for cars and trucks. My Dodge pulls the stock trailer that I have with all the animals that I have, and if need be I can hook up to the International and drive it. My Toyota Taco 4x4 for putting around town, I don't like to fire up the Dodge for a short run into and out of town and for as much as we need it in the snow its real nice to have the 4x4. Penny has her Audi when we need to go someplace and get good mileage, its just not to roomy which is why we bought the Cadillac Escalade Platinum Edition that will hold a boat load people in comfort, that is the nicest thing that I have ever owned, its a pleasure to drive except that the MPG with the 6.2 L gas motor with 420 HP isn't what I would call an economy car.

This Ford is a nice truck. If I were in the market for this type truck I would surely give it a look.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to exchange a few words with an Allison Rep. when he came through security where I work part-time. I told him I had occasionally wished my Cummins was sitting in front of an Allison transmission. He laughed and said that some time back discussions between Chrysler and Allison had taken place, however, GM had shot all of that down. LOL, front office politics!

That's OK, the the Aisin is a better transmission that the Allison 1000's in the pickups. Notice GM has dropped out of the HP and Torque race!!! I believe it is because of the 1000's manufacturers limits.

And yet interestingly enough the DMax spanked the Ram and nearly beat the Ford in the last shootout where they drag raced up the Eisenhower pass. I take those kind of tests with a grain of salt and usually don't even read all the way through them, but I think its an indicator that Ram has quite a bit software programming wrapped up in all that torque to protect the drivetrain. Looking at the numbers on paper Ram should be right there with the other 2 and they rarely are when it comes to the towing comparisons.

Keep adding weight 2K at a time and watch the numbers shift! 8V's will always be quicker to make RPM's vs I-6's. But if you keep loading them the I-6 will be the winning in the end. BTW, the max tow rating on the GM is much lower!

GM 3500HD CAN TOW UP TO 23,200 LBS if 2x4 reg cab. RAM is a bit more by 7K or so.

t I'm not so sure about a haul like this. Gotta have the horsepower to maintain that load and the DMax does it quite well.

I agree, I tow my pulling pickup with a guy that has one, it will give my '01 a work out. However, if I needed/wanted a Ford 650 sized truck, it would not be the Ford. In my opinion a 6.7 of any make or model is too small for a serious truck of this size.

Apples and oranges. "GM 3500HD CAN TOW UP TO 23,200 LBS if 2x4 reg cab. RAM is a bit more by 7K or so." How many really care who gets to the top first anyway.

Long haul trucks played around with V8 Cats and others for a while and now most are I-6's.

This F650 most likely had an Allison 3000 transmission BTW! And a lot less torque management vs the RAM pickups.

I think that the problem with the V8 Cats wasn't that they didn't have the power (Because they had more than enough) it was the weight and MPG that were the problems, Same as the 1693 TTA I6 that I had in a long nose Pete. PLENTY-O-POWER no MPG and it was heavy on the front axle

Yeah my 350 8V71 got 4.5 MPG with half loaded and have empty use, as I hauled gas and diesel one direction. And it spit a lot of oil on the ground to boot! Reliable dinosaur!!!!!

Im sorry when I was talking about V8's I only considered Cat, Detroit's could be made to run but I didn't know anyone that had a Oil well to keep up with the leaks. I wont even consider the small v8 cats in the same class. Cummins had a V8 that was taken out of some farm equipment but didn't do well on the road.
