A Good Step Stool for Working Under the Hood

I finally found a good step stool for working under the hood of my 4x4. It's a Gorilla Ladders Professional Aluminum Work Platform model WP-20-06. I got it at The Home Depot for $34. 94. Click here for more info.



I've tried milk crates, 5 gallon buckets and home made stools. The latest has been a Rubbermaid 16" step stool that would kick out from under me if I leaned too far forward over the fender. It kicked out from under me the other day and I fell forward. My arm hit the clutch fluid reservoir and cracked the mount . After pricing a new reservoir, that included the entire clutch fluid assembly at over $200, I decided it was time to get something a bit more stable.

I had a piece of plywood about 7' x 2' and put a frame and legs out of 2x4s inder it to put it at the same height as a milk crate. It's pretty solid and and has room to set the tools next to your feet, etc.

I use an old kitchen chair. I set it with the backrest toward the truck which is nice for the knees/legs when leaning way in. The DOR bumper kinda keeps you away from the from of the truck so I needed something high enough I could lean way over.



Yeah it kicked out on me once so I just throw a 1" tie down around it and strap it to the tire or bumper.

I have one of these and it is by far the best step solution. It will not slip out from under you when you're leaning over the hood. I added some non-slip tape for when it's wet.



There is one possible drawback - you could forget that it's on and try to drive away. That would have to damage something. I've been meaning to allocate one of those magnetic numbered service cones from a car dealer service dept. You could easily keep this with the step, plop it on the hood when you're working and it would serve as a reminder to stow the step before driving.

I got two of the Aluminum Work Platform a year ago. Of course they are for work. Use them for engine work and washing the truck, one on each side. Oh ya and drywall mudding too. They are good a sturdy. At least they hold me.

I've been meaning to fab one of these. I didn't know one actually existed. When I did my injectors on my last truck, I was getting pretty tired of finding new positions to work, while sparing my lower back and all the vulnerable parts under the hood. I would want to make one that you can use like the one in this picture, or crawl up on top and lay there while working.



Hmmmm... . Time to start drawing pictures.

I have a tire step and it is awsum. Got it as a Xmass gift, but Northern tool carries them.

I painted some non-skid on it for extra grip.

I like it because I can store it behind the seat of my no-storage regular cab.
